Should I re-install Galciv from Stardock Central or from CD?

I had a massive hard drive crash :( and need to reinstalll all my software. To that end, should I reinstall Galciv from my CD or from Stardock Central? To that end, can I do it all from SC, and if so, woudl I be missing anything (movies etc)?

I've had problems installing GalCiv from my CD.

Jeffrey. I am not sure. I would probably get my operating system stable on my hard drive, then add my telecommunications software (Internet, browser,email, etc.), then my applications software including games and lastly my antivirus software last. Turning off the antivirus software when loading other applications is safest.

If everything seems stable, I would load Gal Civ from CD, then visit Stardock via the Internet to update it. There may be better ways but this is how I would do it. I have had to re-format hard drives too many times so I feel for you and wish you good luck. :)

I think that you can only do it from your CD and then go to stardock and download the patches, you will not miss anything by doing this. If you are looking for an empire to join come and check the Empire of The Light, only good and neutral alingment. ;)

You can install it from Stardock Central. But I wouldn't recommend it for someone with dial up. I installed it from it, don't even have a cd.

If you archived GalCiv in SDC then I think you'd be able to re-install it by restoring it (gotta point it at the .zip file) and then you would have the version that you archived ready to go. Of course, to survive a reformat it would have to have been moved off the system partition. :P I've never actually had to try this yet, so I'm going strictly on how I think it works. Anybody out there have first-hand knowledge of how restoring an archive works? Is my understanding accurate or am I way off-base? LOL

If you have the archive files say on a CD, all you would have to do is install SDC, then copy the archive files to the backup directory.  Then choose File->Archive/Restore->Restore Existing and choose the archive files that you want to restore.

So then my understanding of restoring archives is correct? Seemed like a reasonable theory but I wasn't 100% sure. :) Nice to be able to restore to whatever version you last archived in one shot rather than reinstall and then upgrade. Such convenience. :D
