First metaverse submission... a cultural defeat

I think I got carried away with paying the Altarians to attack everybody. Bascially my initial plan was to ally with them and pay them to attack everyone, then I could get a diplomatic victory. What I failed to do was check to see if they were allied with Torians (which they were). It was Me, Torians and Altarians as last majors. I was allied with Altarians and just needed the Torians to ally so I can win.

I could not figure out why I could not ally with Torians. Then I had realized after reading in the manual I needed to have close or better relationship, I only had friendly. Well, I ended up with a cultural defeat on my hands by the Altarians. A few times I had built some ships just to give to the Altarians, they had the strongest military so they did not really need it. It still helped them take down the others easier.

I kind of just sat back and watched while I focused on major research, I was initially going for a technology victory. I would put sensor drones near the systems and sit back and watch the fireworks. All fun and I could have won a diplomatic victory if I would have done it better. Still not 100% sure though because I would have needed to act very quickly in getting Torians allied with me. The Altarians hit the culture victory pretty fast after attacking the others.

I had a similar situation and the same two empires left. Did you try gifting ships/techs and trading with the Torians to get them to close? I had to give them ships and even a crumby system and then they flipped to close and I sealed the deal. Trading with them and gifting helps.
