Economy Help!

I'm having a lot of trouble with my economy. I mean a lot of trouble. On cakewalk. Isn't that sad?
Anyway, I always have to bleed my people dry in order to get 30% spending rate, and I find that governments have very little effect.
What I usually do to solve this problem is to set 100% to Research, amass a bunch of tech, and sell it for a huge amount of money. But the problem is, this drives other races deep into debt, and then *I* begin going deep into debt unless I pay off their debt suficently and sell a bunch of tech again.
But...All is fine when the "Galactic Entrepenurs(sp?)" event is in effect.
Is there any way to get this on permanently? Or do you have any tips for a good economy? I mean, it's frustrating having to set spending so low, and whatnot...I'm never gobbled up by anyone, but I'm about as powerful as they are.

Mods are fine too, as I care not for any metaverse score.

1. Don't use high tax rates. Moral should be at 100% at the beginning. Otherwise you have clandestine workers and insufficient population growth. Illicit work and small population => no taxes. Constantly adjust your tax rate at the beginning to keep at least your best planet at 100 %

2. Use trade as a cash cow.

3. Watch your leases and maintanance costs. It's very expensive to buy something and to maintain a large fleet. Don't build all social projects, some are way to expensive.

I usually set taxes about 50% and spending as high as I can go without losing money for as long as I can. Definitely keep an eye on morale and build the entertainment network early so you can stretch the higher tax rate a few more turns.

Trade is critical. I try to get freighters out the door as soon as I can. Once the routes are established I start backing off on the taxes.

Definitely watch the leases! I use them sparsely and only in the early land grab if I find a high pq planet I just have to have. If you do lease adjust your spending to accomodate and try to sell techs if you can to make up for it.

I learned not to build everything on a planet in the way of social stuff. The maintenance costs really add up and can stagnate the economy by mid game on larger maps. One tip is to disband some of your older ships when you get newer/better ones. You can also get rid of stuff you built on the planets and at least save the maintenance costs.

Later you can use constructors to build starbases on your trade routes to enhance the amount of BC's you pull in from the route.

Don't build a huge fleet unless you need it. Maintenance costs will go up. I try to build the capability to toss up a fleet quickly and build ships as I anticipate their needs. I used to overbuild and cripple myself later which makes for a much longer end game.

Why disband them when you can sell them a weak player or aplayer who is at war? They're worth money or even better techs :D
