Obvious Research Fix?

I'm probably missing something obvious but, given the amazing amount of ongoing patching which happens with this game, I don't understand why, similar to civilisation, there seems to be no option to set a reaearch "goal" and have the game automatically set your research path till you reach the goal?
Even the Javascout site does not appear to offer this ability?

This would be an interesting idea. I think I saw this asked once before but I don't know if it made the to do list.
