In my galactic game I am always attacked before I can accomplish any decent civilization.

I am a new player and I am getting experience, though it would be much funner too play without getting attacked too quick and too understand certain policies before I go to war.

Star playing at the lower level, small size, try to build as quick as you can some defenders and starship attackers so the AI's don't see you as an easy pray. If you are looking for an empire come and join the Empire of The Light. Also if you need more help let me know, you don't ahve to join my empire for me to help you. OK. ;)

What difficulty/map size/political party/initial picks are you playing? I suggest you play a game with Populist Party and as much Diplomacy as you can start with. Also consider picking Weapons or Defense initially. Play a game on Cakewalk and research Weapons/Phasers as quickly as you can. Build several Star Fighters on one planet while you are in the initial Colony Rush. You should be able to keep out of trouble for a while, but keep an eye on the Diplomacy screen and watch for the AIs going to Cool. Try to get Trade Routes established with any AIs who slip below Neutral, as trade improves relations.

Hope this helps! Check out the Strategy Forums (http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GS) for more help!

And welcome to the Metaverse! :HOT:

Typically the AI attacks you because they perceive that you are weak. The easiest way to avoid being attacked is to build a strong military.

The following works pretty well on the lower levels:

Land Grab. You need to get as many planets as possible. Initially you should allocate 100% to military and crank out colony ships as fast as you can. Colonize as many yellow systems as you can (but only one planet in the system at first). After you have claimed as many yellow planets as possible, use the left over colony ships to colonize the 'extra' planets in a system or grab PQ level 14 planets.

Once the land grab is complete, switch your sliders to 100% research and research Comm Theory, Universal Translator, and Diplomacy.

At this point I usually adjust the sliders again and split my spending evenly between Social and Research. Build Soil Enhancement and Banking on every planet. When Earth builds a bank, I usually have them work on Diplomatic Translators. The game becomes much easier if you can get this Trade Good. Keep it for yourself. Build the Entertainment Network on the other planets.

Now research Weapons Theory, Phasers, Photons, and Corvettes. The goal is to get to Corvettes quickly to build a 'paper military'. If an AI demands something other than a planet before you get to Corvettes, it is probably best to give them what they want. If they ask for a planet, tell them no but then immediately give them a gift (Cash, a tech, or a ship) to keep them off your back.

Make sure to trade techs whenever possible. Try to trade for techs that will add projects to the build queue (Habitat Improvement, Manufacturing Center, Economic Exchange, News Network, Research Center, ..)

Once you have researched Corvettes, adjust the sliders so that 50% is going to Military and 25% ,25% to the others. Start cranking out Corvettes until you have the strongest military. The corvettes are actually pretty useless, but they allow you to build a very strong 'paper army' that will keep the AIs off your back until you can actually do some real damage.

At this point the options are endless, depends on what type of game you want to play. If you are looking for a real military, hustle right along to Frigates.

There are a million other things, hopefully this will be enough to get you past the initial hostilities.

Oh yeah, you should join the Aldarian Empire LOL

My favorite way is to get them to fight each other as much as possible. A turn without war is a wasted turn. Sure you can give them tech so they like you, and build enough of a military to scare them off, but every turn they fight themselves wastes their resorces and saves yours. Even if it takes an armload of tech I think its worth it.

If you are really evil get them to attack someone so they send their fleet in an opposite direction of yours, then come in and take a few planets before they can return, but this is of course for later, after you have built up a bit.

I would of course always argue that guns don't solve anything!

I play every difficulty level without really building any military until the final turns (for maximum points).

High diplomacy, and strategic trading and gifts are the key to maintaining the peace.

Of course if you know you're not going to build a military, there is no need to research any military techs, so you can concentrate on the diplomacy/trade ones to help keep relations high. If you can't keep all of them high, make sure you're friends with the strongest ones and then you can always turn them against those that don't like you.

That's one of the strengths of the game, there are many ways to play it. Of course, the above strategy is more difficult on high difficulty levels with large maps. However it works fine for even Masochistic small/medium games. If you look, I finished 4 such games this past weekend. They took on average 1-1.5 hours. Not bad for ~25,000 points each.

Talk like that gets you shot in my empire. Then we taunt your corpse saying things like 'don't solve anything eh!'.

There are a hundred ways to play. I am just suggesting one path for someone who is getting hassled by aliens.

Let's not hijack this thread to a guns are bad discussion.

If you really though I was saying "guns are bad" then you completely misunderstood the point. I was just saying I don't play a military game, and I also don't get attacked by the computer. I'm just pointing out the guy who asked for help, that building a military is not the only solution to being attacked.

I downloaded some files from the library and saved them on a floppy disc from a computer that doesn't have Galactic Civilizations on it, but I want to install the library files on my other computer that has Galatic Civilizations from the floppy disc. How do I do this? I'm not sure. (my other computer is connected to the internet)

You should try to use trading as early as possible. The others will hesitate (a little) before throwing away your trade for a war. On the other hand, you'll have to develop freighter fast.
