Keep Our Forum Clean!

OK, y'all. I'm not the most frequent poster of games by a long shot, but I've kept my ear to the ground here in the Forums for quite a few months. And on several occassions, some players have gone beyond competitive bantering and started flaming, without regards to the rest of the audience around here. The little escapades of the last few hours are only the latest example.

Those of you who are Citizens may not be aware of the "Galactic Council," a separate Forum for Vets and above. Don't worry, this isn't the Trilateral Commission; it's just a way for those that Stardock has recognized to discuss issues away from the hubbub in here. The topic of flame wars has come up on several occassions. I here reprint a few excerpts from one of my posts on the topic - mainly because it's easier than typing up something fresh to match current events:

...We need to do a better job of policing ourselves. ..There's a line between good-natured Imperial trash-talking and mean-spiritedness. That line has been crossed on several occasions...I'm here for the community as much as the game, and it gets tiring trying to skip around a thread to dodge the attitudes. On the whole, I understand that many have said this forum is pretty tame by Internet standards, maybe because the game attracts older players. It's still not good enough...there are better ways to settle disagreements than with flame wars.

If players start dropping out because they just get tired of the attitudes, there will be a smaller customer base for the game and thus less reason for Stardock to support the product. That hurts those of us who are still here. For the sake of enlightened self-interest if not common decency, let's keep it down.

In case this quiet, well-reasoned post doesn't catch your fancy, here's one that's new and a bit more blunt. I don't care if you're one of my best friends or a troll; I don't care if you're in my empire, another one, or none at all. I don't care who started it. This is a PUBLIC FORUM read by ALL AGES and isn't the place for this crap. Many Empires have private off-site forums; if you must vent, do it there, do it by email, or scream it into a hole in the ground. I freely admit that I've done all of these things, on several occassions; none of us are saints. But if you feel motivated and absolutely MUST respond here in public, make your point in a civil manner. Apologies after the fact don't cut it.

Anyone who thinks I'm being high-handed and superior here may well be right. But the fact that this nonsense is still going on is a sign that not everybody here agrees with simple politeness, and these issues HAVE to be raised by somebody.

If you're tempted to "flame on" by reading this post, or think I'm demanding that you explain your actions to keep your audience happy, you're missing the point. If you demand that your "opponents" be exiled for rudeness while ignoring the fact that you threw gasoline on the same fire, you're missing the point.

The point is that it doesn't belong in here, period.

P.S. Kudos to Spellforce for stating that he's willing to lower the boom on offenders if neccessary.

Not at all. I, for one, respond to your comments with a hearty "Hear here."

After some confusion i would like to point out that i wholely agree with Samurai Ben on this issue. the comments i made are aimed at the whole of the metaverse and not at the writer of this thread.

I will make this simple... 'Flame' wars will not be tolerated, they bring upset and misery to the metaverse. if a 'flame' post is bought to my attention, it will be deleted.

Having attuned ourselves to the needs of some in the Metaverse, the Diplomats have created a thread on our forum, http://www.chatarea.com/TheSenateHalls, where those who find themselves in a difficult position may go to receive our counsel.

So before pulling out the bare bodkin, why not step into our Audience Chamber, where you will be warmly welcomed into the 'Slings and arrows of outrageous fortune' Thread for assistance in any interrelational difficulties you might be having in the Metaverse?

Umm , dont shoot me, i read / post here quite often, Im not too sure if your in the right place, i am a member, as Darkspire, on lots of game forums and the GalCiv forums are the most friendly forums ive encountered, ive seen a few wonky words, like when i tried to start an empire, but ive never seen any real 'flaming' on here, even CariElf has a fanclub :D and in all the game forums ive ever posted on ive never seen a fan club for a programmer! as i said, i read most of the posts on here and the only time i ever see any wonky words are in the empire posts, other topics do get heated sometimes but IMHO i feel these forums are very good.
And hey, im a veteran, where is this "Galactic Council" that you mention? :HOT:

Agree that - MOST of the time - this is an outstanding, entertaining and informative forum. I don't seem to have a lot of free time these days, but I look forward to spending some of it here. And NOT just because of the game, but because I enjoy the company of a lot of the people in this community.

in all the game forums ive ever posted on ive never seen a fan club for a programmer!

Ah, but the great Lady CariElf is so much more than just a programmer! :D

Yes, the Imperial threads can get testy with the trash-talking; that isn't my point. If you missed the latest bouts of silliness, congratulations. But Imperial threads aren't the only problem areas by a long shot. Strategy and off-topic threads have seen their share of exchanges that don't belong.

If this is your way of saying that you're more tolerant, that's fine. But if you're saying this isn't going on or isn't worth discussing, I calmly beg to differ. And so would many others here, judging from responses here and comments in other threads.

The "Galactic Council" button is on the left side of your browser window, right under "GC Mods."

to be honest, i kinda enjoy reading flamewars. however, i do agree that this forum should be kept flame free. a forum being run by a business that wants to support its product isnt a good place to have a flamewar. a forum being run by someone at home as a hobby, i guess is a more acceptible place to post your flames.

quote of the moment:
"its unatural to go through life without ever raising your fist in anger"

ps. if you come across any good flamewar threads, please tell me!!! LOL (joke)

I've never really visited game forums before GalCiv, but I have been to a few non-gaming forums and yes, this site is remarkably flame-free (though I don't read every tread). Seems like a good idea getting on top of flaming problems before they get out of hand. This is a great forum and I hope you can keep it in such great shape. :D

I think that's the problem, most people watch flame wars with avid interest once they start, me included and soon people talk about them, add their five cents worth, it makes its way into other threads and it all gets blown out of proportion. Fortunately we got a nice bunch of people here in this forum who are pretty good at not letting this kind of stuff get out of hand. ;)

i remember there was this one forum i used to visit long time ago, back in 1995. the set-up was kinda stupid, there was a way to allow you to change your name to someone elses, and there would be no way to tell who was the real poster of a message unless you where the system admin. the forum was fairly popular, and there would be a flame war practically every hour, it was hilarious!

Oh, I remember a couple dodgy forums like that, but you could tell if it was a real user by looking at the raw HTML. Of course, then someone figured out an undetectable way to fake names and it all went to hell...
