in the dark
the snow swirls and floats to the ground
lake effect fluffy flakes back lit with street
lights glowing yellow through the night
in the distance, by the ball park, two figures
dark shapes walking, trudging, stumbling, but
steady,
wanting to find the warmth inside and out.
why are they out there, in the shit storm of snow
and slush, walking in the dark to get what?
booze, weed, some china white in a spoon, a couple
of rocks,
maybe home,
but I don’t think so, they walk like
junkies, like fucked up cars that always seems to have
one more trip left, smoke sputtering from the tailpipe,
cough and backfire, but moving forward.
such is the determination of the junkie animal, like roaches
scrambling away from rolled up newspaper, they endeavor to
persevere.
