Screen lockup when attacking ships

On starting an attack on another ship my screen virtualy freezes (action very slooow -ie 30 secs for one salvo to leave a ship and much longer to arrive at target) On selecting Cont-Alt-Del thetask manager flashes in the back ground (does not actualy appear on screen) the shooting the speeds up slightly - but still un playable. The rest of the game is fine. I am using ver 1.13 ( and new to this game)

Any help would be great otherwise the one week old game will hit the back of the drawer!!!

Many thanks

This is usually a problem with sound or video drivers.  Try updating your drivers and DirectX.

Thanks,
I have the latest Radeon 8500 drivers but could only find audigy drivers dated Aug 2003 may well be newer ones I look again. I am using Directx v 9.b i belive this is probably ok?

Thanks for the input

Yep.  The sound only really needs DirectX 8.1b, but updating drivers/DirectX often works anyway. You could try re-installing your sound and video drivers if you can't find anything newer.

Also, do you have any media player programs other than Windows Media Player installed?

Update, I have purchased an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card and loaded the latest drivers - No Luck! I have found newer Audigy drivers - still no luck. I am going to get an audigy 2 tomorrow - I have a feeling its a sound problem. I do have realtime multimeadia installed - guess I had better remove this also.
Again thanks for the interest.

Oooooh....new video card. Trying very hard not to drool on my keyboard here. :)

I haven't had any problems reported with realtime multimedia so far. Winamp3 and WinDVD are the most common culprits of installing bad sound codecs.

I think I am creeping up on this one. The game as I have stated works perfectly in all things, including trouble fee music. Only when I attack a ship does the screen appear to freeze. Techically it does not completely lock the cursor is always available and moves correctly (but no selections are accepted/ possible) eventualy the rockets (or what ever is beeing fired) appear and slooowly move across the screen If I leave the game 20-30 mins an outcome of the particular attack is resolved and the game reverts to normal!! The action can be accelerated slightly by hitting the windows Key (next to the control key) a definate speed icrease is found hear - the attack resolves itself in about 1-2 mins.
My belief is this is a sound codec problem! I have down loaded the recomended codec file, but from a previous game a long time ago I believe you have to manualy install a new codec ie remove the old one and enable the new one? I could easily be wrong hear. This appears to be too good a game to give up on without trying every thing!!

Thanks the reply

PS How do I get this info to Cari?

Happy Bear :)

Having down loaded Microsofts latest service pack 1 (7.9MB) then selected the most likely Microsft patches 17.9MB) I installed the lot and bingo! Game is perfect. Pity If I'd remembered to install patches etc one at a time I may have found out where the problem actualy lay. This would have cured my curiosity and even prehaps helped others.
Anyway many thanks for the replies - I'll go away and learn how to play the game now
