Helping Friendly Civs with Little Presents and a query

Howdy Folks,

I developed a useful little tactic, and I was wondering if other people had ever used it: I have always hated giving warships to civs I want to help, the AIs are dreadfully wasteful, especially the minors, whose ships rarely keep the bonuses I might has aquired.

So I tried building a starbase in a sector owned by a civ under attack from a stronger one. I gave it all the defensive modules available (obviously works best at Avatar level or higher), and then gave it to the civ under threat.

It worked a treat, attracting attacks as manure attract flies, and taking out multiple warships before finally succumbing. On one occasion I watched 10 Dreadnoughts and other lesser warships get destroyed in one turn.

2 or 3 of these starbases (I call them Santa's Little Workshops) can seriously deplete the strength of a powerful civ without the necessity of going to war, and instead of watching expensive Dreadnoughts being frittered away, all it costs is 11 or 12 relatively cheap constructors.

Also, in an earlier post, someone said that alpha striking a civ meant that it's allies would be unbothered by this, so I tried it. It failed, and I had to lug my TSs across the galaxy for more work. So did I do summat wrong?

I'm still puzzled by the economics of this alpha strike tactic - I've found it impossible to accumulate the multiple's of 5000bcs in time to stop a more powerful civ from culture bombing the univerese. Is one allowed to go into huge debt in one turn? (I used Maxtipherous's "ABC of Alpha Striking", which contained lots and lots of other useful tips. Thanks muchly!!)

Only in V1.13 and below.

I often trade with only one minor and provide it with lots of military starbases with attack and defence modules - after all if the enemy is destoyed before they get to the starbase so much the better :)

An ally won't always go to war against you. Perhaps in the post you're referring to, the player did not realize that it wasn’t an ally that didn’t mind, but rather an ally that didn’t want to go to war. Still, it’s always best to check who is allied with someone you’re about to attack regardless of technique.

Are you playing on rare? It all depends on how much cash you generate in your treasury, how quickly your existence is threatened, and how many planets a dominating civ gathers. In some games I can easily take out each major one by one. In other games I have to take them out all at once because of treasury limitations. It depends on how things play out.

Hope this helps! :)
