Mmm, Smells Like Florida

olfactory memories

My bathroom doesn't have a lock. So when I'm in there, I place a jug of bleach against the door, lest the cat come nudging in for a look around.

Today, as I reached down to move the bleach bottle, a slight scent entered my nostrils that instantly reminded me of Florida. Suddenly the warmth of the day and the sun streaming in took on new life. My bathroom melted away and became St. Augustine! Orlando! Tampa!

I looked around for what that smell could have been. What's in my bathroom that smells like Florida and why hadn't I noticed before? Ah, that was it. When I'd bent over, my nose had skirted near a bottle of sunscreen.

Warmth, sun, and sunscreen -- to me that triggers Florida!

Hehe...I know exactly what you mean.  I was cleaning out my medicine cabinet yesterday and came across a bottle of tanning oil that had leaked a bit...and the smell took me immediately to the pool last summer.

Diesel exhaust fumes always remind me of London.....

I lived on the Tampa Bay peninsula (Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor) for a couple of years. We had orange trees in our yard. When I'd mow the lawn, a few oranges usually got caught in the mower. So the smell of Florida to me is a mixture of fresh cut lawn and oranges.

Thanks for conjuring sweet memories.
