Exploration, Stellar Cartography, and Uncommon/Rare planet games

I've done a three games now with Uncommon planet setting, on a large galaxy. The first one, I had a very good setup -- influence resources everywhere, a decent amount of planets... I won easily.

The second game was far different -- I had three planets, having to colonize two 14 PQ planets to bring myself up to 5. I was able to capture one resource. Why? Because of my start position. There was very little around me, and I was in the center of the galaxy, basically surrounded. I ended up abandoning the game, because it was becoming quite clear my race was on a downward spiral.

The third game has been similar to the first, and while I don't have quite as many resources, in my -beginning- sector, there were three other yellow stars. Three! Same settings... and I in a few months I had more yellow star systems than on the game before.

The point of it all -- it seems to me that your starting location, especially on uncommon planets, dictates far too much how you will end up doing in the game. I was wondering what others have done to solve this in their games, in terms of ideas for production/winning method/etc. Personally, I'd like to see a more balanced start position for all races. And more use for stellar cartography -- everytime I finally get it, all of the planets are populated, so it does me little good.

My guess is that Stellar Cartography would be of more use on huge maps. Some people like to hit CTRL-N once the game starts to change their starting position. I think the random feature is nice, because if you want to challenge yourself with a bad start you can, or if you want to make sure you have a good start, you can do that too.

I try to use ctrl+N until I have a fair position, not too hard or too easy.

Not me! The ctrl-n is an option for those who want an easier (or harder) position to start in. Or you can deal with what the fates gave you as they do with the other races, and just play what you get. Much versatility, I don't see a reason to kill it.

Stellar Cartography is better on the larger maps, certainly. I thought it would be also useful if they would make another tech. Spectral Cartography or something. One that you had to have Stellar as a prerequisite (making it more worthwhile of a choice), that would identify dark purple / purple systems (high value worlds / high influence worlds). From what I've seen, other races can not see these systems from the start of the game, so it would be useful long term. One game, well after all the systems worth taking had been, I found a lone system on the edge of the map (quite near a major power) that had two class 26's, a class 17 and a class 15 planet. Not shabby!
