Culture drowning out tech

Hi, I'm near the end of my game and I'm trying to get a research victory (never gotten to see the cutscene before yet) the problem is, by the time I finally got the Drengin's too stop trying to kill me, I had taken over all their planet's but two. Now I am at like 95% culture, and I'm going to win that way before I can get my research done. I'm on near omnipotent now with like 10 mts left on that, any ideas? I tried destroying a bunch of my colonies, but that seemed to make my influence go higher???? go figure, I tried to turn off culture victory, but I guess you have to do that before you start. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,
quiksilverhg
oh, I'm good alignment if that makes any difference

I don't think you can just get rid of the culture victory. You could try gifting some of your planets with high culture to another race, thereby causing you to lose some sectors. Thats the only thing I can think of.

you can gift the drengin some systems... The tech victory movie is the best of all of them! ;p

You can't win a culture victory while at war... but you could win a military victory if you flip all their planets. Keep giving their last few planets back to them.

Since, when you load a game, the influence needs 2 turns to be correct, you could use it as a workaround to prevent a cultural victory: when you see that the counter is on, you save your game, reload it. The influence won't be the same so luckilly, you will have gain 2 turn before the restart of the countdown. Work well on tight cluster galaxies.

I feel for you;
The culture win (ver 1.13, not tried 1.19) is way too easy, I turned that win condition off after my first game.
The tech win takes so long it can, as you seem to have found, be a chore just to avoid winning by another route.
I tend to use influence to reduce the opposition, then stomp them, hard, I find a military win by far the most satisfactory, but the alliance win is more practical as you don't have to wipe out your final trading partner(s), otherwise financing that last push can be tricky.
Remember: It is just a game, and as such is far more important than something as trivial as real life.

In 1.19 the culture win is harder in the late game becuse of the increasing cost of starbases. In my last game the final starbase cost me 64oobc just for the base unit. I usually find I need at least 2 in each sector that has one start system and more if there are 2. Also, the new spacing enforcement may keep a busy sector from being able to place the needed amount of starbases to flip the systems.
