Still, they are polite

I come from poor, no shame in it, just saying it,
we were like urban hill folk, barefoot and pregnant, and
all the characterizations that come with being white-trash
poor,
being poor white is worse than poor black, blacks were
supposed to live in the projects and eat welfare food, take drugs
and make babies, they were only guilty of being black,
we were white, we didn’t have an excuse,
I’m fond of saying “I didn’t know I was white till I went to
college,” it was certainly true culturally, I’ve never attended a
mixer where I drank cognac and cried to the songs of Billie holiday
or woke up the next day on the heaving breasts of a black woman
dipped in musk,
I have found that people in suits and suburban living lack a certain
flavor, a cultural corncob shoved so deep it’s considered as a body
part, like an appendix—possible to live without,
they’re nice people, not offensive or controversial, barely a shadow
cast in a sunny room, but they’re not the kind you can count on in
the shit storm, shit storms are chaos and chaos comes from living
wrong and living wrong is your choice, not theirs,
still, they are polite.
