Windows or Linux?

Which would be better for...

Hey, if i wanted to write script for guestbooks, chat, forums (like this one), flash, html, javascript, order forms, etc. would a windows server (ASP enabled) or linux server (PHP enabled) be better. In other words, would guestbooks, forums, etc. be better in php&cgi or asp&cgi.

Also, what does this site use? cause thats basically what i want.

Right now comparing HostMySite to Netfirms and Linux is soo much cheaper.

I'd say PHP, but I type PHP for a living, so I'm biased. Pros of PHP is that it's incredibly easy to learn if you have some familiarity with coding, that the manual is excellent and (in your case) that there are lots of freely available fora/guestbooks/whatever. Con is that it is somewhat primitive, coding style-wise. Ruby is much more elegant, but that's a different story.

ASP is mostly used by big corporations, who run everything else on Win-platforms, so the web-bits as well.

I would say that either platform is equally capable and it's really just a matter of which one you are more comfortable with. If you already know PHP or ASP, I'd go with what you know. PHP can also be run on Windows, so you aren't restricted to Linux if you want to use it.

Go with your prefered scripting language I'd say.
