Managing population

From what I have read once a planets population hits a certain level its morale starts to go down. How do you no when this is happening because of over population? How do you know what the optimum population is for a planet? How do you manage your population once this occurs? This game has so many levels of strategy its mind blowing.

I am totally in agreement with you ... this game is totally awesome regarding levels of strategy.

As for your question, I think (veterans will correct me) once a planet reaches a percentage lower than 50%, the population starts to shrinks and when its higher, pop grows.

Take this lightly though. I am not sure at all.

The optimum population level could be seen as the number of people a planet can take before its morale falls under 100%. This amount is not constant or easy to predict- it depends on Planet Quality, morale bonuses, and tax rate.
To put this in context, a decent newly colonised planet with a low population level will start with 100 morale, giving it a doubled population growth rate. After a while the population level will rise to the point where morale falls below 100, and then morale will keep falling until it gets to 54 or so, at which point growth stops altogether. You can delay or prevent the morale drop by building Soil Enhancement, Entertainment Network, etc.

Very low population on a planet can have incredible growth rate: I have colonized planest with only 1 colonist and the next turn, and I find 5 people in this planet. 400% growth rate. Nice :)

Just read the whole thread on morale and along with the above I think I grasp the realationships. Worst case problem with a over population is a drop in morale, but over population will not by itself, drop it below 50%. You also will get to a zero population growth at some point do to the lowering morale effect. So the problem is self managing and does not require my micro management.I can build social structures,that improve morale and will increase the maximum population level on the planet before the effect kicks in again. Have I got it?

Yes: if you allow all your morales to fall to 54 and you find yourself needing to increase taxes, then you will suffer seriously low morale. That's why I keep my taxes at 50% all the time - it stops planets getting overpopulated.
