New to turn based strategy...

This is the first TBS game I have ever played. I think I am going to fast or something. I really enjoy the game, but I do not think I understand the depth of it. I usually start by leasing 4 -5 colony ships. When i have colonized planets i get confused. Do all my planets need all the different social projects, or should my economic capital option be employed on the outer rims of my system or in the middle...etc...etc... Is there a good post somewhere with I guess a walkthrough of sorts or a good place to start. I do not even know how hard to set the AI for begginers...LOL. Any help would be appreciated. :notsure:

You probably shouldn't lease them, set your military spending and spend rate to 100% and you will make them every two or three turns, and building everything on every planet is a waste of money and not a good idea, your probably lucky to afford it at all, build only what each planet needs.

Its sort of trial and error then? I'm not sure how to really tell what each planet needs. The instruction manual is pretty vague. I try to build most things on my outer rim planets so the influence has better effect on my neighbours.

For you planets the most important are PQ enhancers (like soil enhancement, terraforming), economy enhancers (like bank, stock exchange) and if needed moral improvements (Ent. network, multimedia center)

And after that other stuff like production imps. and others, when needed.
Otherwise (if you build more then needed, or even all imps.) you will get into depth.

You have to balance morale, economy and maintanance.

First spend 100% military at 100% spending until you got all those colony ships and scouts you need. Leasing is very expensive and should not be used very often (only when you really need this two month advantage in a race for a planet).

Then research Medical Theory and Basic Environment Control to get Habitat Improvement. When finished switch to 100% social and build soil enh. and habitat on all planets. All govenor queues you use should start with these two. They are cheap and cost no maintanance. Planet Qulality (PQ) enhances everything on your planet!

Then research diplomacy.

After that it depends on your preferences.

Morale is very important especially at the beginning. A planet with 100% morale has a doubled population growth. You need that to get more taxes and influence. Thus paradoxically you have to lower the tax rate to get more money. Build morale enhancements first on the planets where morale drops under 100% first when you raise taxes (at the beginning e.g. 49% is often a good tax rate, later 39%, but this can vary). Try to keep 100% morale until mid game.

Build capitals on your best planet (highest PQ).

Always build banking center. It is cheap and again no maintanance. Build econ ex. when you don't know what to build else.

I build all manufactioring enhancers on my best planet. It speeds up building but only half of the additional building is free. Thus you need more money and you can only keep global spending at 100% when you don't build them everywhere.

I build some of them on the next best planets but usually not Fusion since it costs much maintanance. Somtimes I also build manufactioning on front planets to build ships there faster.

The goal is to get some planets to crank out the trade goods an wonders while you can still afford 100% spending.

Don't forget trade. It is very important at the beginnig to get money and to improve relations.

In mid and late game it get's even more complicated since there are some caps. Often it does not make sence to build morale or economy projects any more on planets with a high population.
