Downloading GalCiv: AP Beta!

Just want to find out where things stand:

Have those of you who pre-ordered Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy downloaded it yet? And if not, what problems are you running into?

Frogboy, I ran into several problems trying to download, but Pat changed the format of the download (rather than one big zip file, it downloads several small ones). It downloaded just fine, and I've already played a game. Looks great!

If I choose the CD-ROM pre-order option, can I still download the beta?

I take it the only difference between the DL and CD versions is the shipping cost gets you an actual disk.

Tylertoo, yes. If you pre-order the CD-Rom version, you still get to play the beta.

I had to restart the Download 3 times because I got HTML-Error -8

Will the final be ~20 Megs again or will it be like a patch for the beta making the final of it?

The final game will not require much more in terms of updates. Most of the 20 megs you had to download were the new screens and ships.

I purchased and downloaded on the same day. No problems. If only I had time to play... (:(

Thanks for the info. Also:

-Is the $19.95 pre-order price a discount, or will the price be the same after it goes gold?

-Does AP overwrite GalCiv, or is it a completely seperate install? (I ask in part because I'm still new to the original game, and want to keep them seperate).

I downloaded the beta no problems. The game works fine.

The only problem I had was I changed my email address for AP (due to spam reasons) and it took me ages to figure out how to update my profile to the new email address.

Done now, so all is good.

i've had a go downloading 4 times but failed. the zip appears to be one big file of 18MB or so, and downloading on me 33.6K line takes a while. failure occurs at random points eg 10MB, 16MB etc etc. a bit frustrating. i was under the impression that the download could 'resume' but doesn't appear to be the case ie the download starts from scratch each time. same error message each time ie error 8.......any advise? (using win98SE)

(:(

I pre-ordered a while back, but had to use a different email due to the credit card. I dont get any options for downloading it.

Something tells me I did something wrong here.........

Make sure the "Show pre-release versions" option is checked. (bottom left corner of the screen under Software)

I too changed e-mail address.

It seems to be a major problem for this complicated system.

I had trouble even buying it.
I had to register again. Now I too cannot see it anywhere. I have updated Stardock central and I have "show pre-release versions" clicked.

Marquesa... Did you got to wincustomize and change your email address in your user profile?

Yes.

Then when I tried to buy AP, the system wanted me to log on with my old e-mail and then update to the new one.
Only problem was that the confirmation e-mail was sent to the old e-mail.

Finally got that sorted.
Now no sign of AP.

ok, LOL, I just figured out my problem.

On Stardock check your registration info, under games go to the little drop down and choose Altarian Prophecy, change the email to the email you purchases with and there was an email that came with it with your registration code.

and now I have downloaded it. that was one long download. though not as long as that 80meg one i did on a 56k a while back.

Not true - I always "download and archive", to protect myself in the even of a bad release (it has happened). Using that feature forces me to re-download every file every single time.

Ordered and downloaded it yesterday with no problems.

OK, for everyone having download problems with the single-file zip, could you take a new Stardock Central for a spin?

As I expect this is mostly hitting dialup users, you may want to archive the AP you may have installed already (File menu in SDC).

Now, uninstall the AP you have. :)

Close SDC. Download and extract http://134.215.215.67/private/sdc131.zip over your existing sdcentral dir. Fire it up. Attempt to download the AP or Political Machine full zip's.

And it helps if I put the file in the right place. Try now.

I tried to download it tonight but got an error message. Then i decided to reinstall everything. CD install from the retail game worked fine. Then i downloaded patch 1.2 from this page. When i tried to install i got an error message:
CRC 48b57552 (should be b6038d5f)
then i tried again to update (not AP) from Stardock central...again error message.
Could i get a cd with the patch 1.2 when my cd of AP is shipped? otherwise i won't be able to play... :(

I had no problems downloading it, except figuring out how to do so in the first place. Once I realized that I needed to put in my serial number in SDC, it all went fine.
