New to Gal Civ, annoying experience

I seem to be fairly getting the hang of it, playing on normal, one of the two major powers. But just now I had a planet Defect to some peon little minor civ. Now, I am assuming this is a factor of people spending money to destabilize me or whatever (Im pretty dominant in influence), but it just seemed rediculous.
This little planet, a major naval staging area for my next war with the other big guy, suddenly decides to defect to a minor who is currently at war with the other big guy, and has at best 12 turns or so left. On top of that, a good hunk of my navy was sitting in orbit, including transports. I know the game doesnt factor it in, but perhaps it should. Maybe a check of fleet presence when it chooses which planet revolts.
It just doesnt seem realistic. The little peons look up, see a dozen lumbering dreadnoughts with some transports, and think, 'gee, this would be a good time to defect to someone who cant even defend themselves, and are so inferior in every way that they are the laughing stock of the galaxy.'
