copyright questions about using pictures and names in submitted mods

i've noticed that in some of the submitted mods pictures from e.g. StarWars or FantasyArt-pages are used. Aren't those pics under copyright? As far as i understand it's allowed to download such pics for personal use, but how is the situation if pics and names are submitted as mods (a kind of distribution so to say) or if such mods are implemented later on in the game? I'd like to submit some of my mods from time to time, and i have a fair share of sci-fi pics at hand, but i'm a bit worried about the legal situation here. Do i have to contact the authors/artists/corporations of such pics and ask for permission to use them, or can i just use them for my postings?

You will need to get permission to use someone else's work.

Yep best to get your graphics from a public domain site. Or contact the designer and sa what you want to use it for. Most are fine when they know its not for a financial gain
