selling ships

When you sell a ship to another race it would be nice if it maintained the attack and defense values. I understand that the other race may be technologically inferior but most of the advantages would be built into the ship and shouldn't vanish when sold. I like selling advanced ships to weak empires to help them defend themselves. It is annoying though when those ships suddenly 'degrade' so that the enemy empire can easily destroy them. If I sell an att: 15, Def: 15 ship, I want it to remain as such not become an att: 5, def: 6 ship for my ally.

Part of the degration could be because the other race, not knowing the technology yet, also doesn't know how to use it.

Perhaps when you sell a ship to another race, the other race should be able to learn the tech from your ship? Also, when buying a ship from another race that contains techs you haven't researched, perhaps you should "learn" those techs from the ship. If this is done then containing tech the buying race (even the terrans) does not have should be a LOT more expensive than the same ships without techs the buying race doesn't know.

Learning techs from buying ships is a nice idea, but I don't always want my ally to learn the techs in the ships I give him. I could just give him those techs. I want him to have a kick ass ship to win the war with (without me having to join the war). Surely training would also be included in the price of the ship.

Imagine a high tech empire supplying war ships to every other empire in the galaxy. The ship builders empire.

Paul,

How many times have you heard of one side of a conflict learning the secrets of the other side by dismantling captured equipement? History is replete with it. It can't be avoided. So if you are willing to sell ships with new (to the buyer) technology you have to extract a big enough price to make the risk of reverse engineering worth it.
