Blockading

Has anyone ever tried blockading enemy planets (i.e. surrounding there star with 8 scouts so nothing can get in or out of the planet)? I was wondering if this strategy would work to weaken the strongest AIs by blocking their trade from other races, or do freighters manage to get by this? Obviously the AI will have problems if you do this, since they cant launch ships, they will not be able to upgrade their starbases or build more than a certain amount of military ships. I havent actaully tried this, i just thought it might be interesting to see if others might have, and if it was effective or not.

It used to work but now freighters can occupy the same space as your ships when your not at work and they pass straight through :(

When blockading a planet I've noticed one of two things happen. Either i) If its a major AI and they're powerful they tend to declare war on you OR ii) I often shield my trade minors with a wall of ships and they just seem to be able to pass straight through mine without any problems

I use them as my trade cash cows if I don't want to be friends with the AI :)

I think this was an exploit that the devs got rid of in one of the earlier versions of the game. So the ai will be able to leave the star to fight even if you surround it with (crap) ships.

If you surround a planet with ships, that planet can still launch ships. (the bug that was fixed) However, nobody can land any ships on that planet.

If you want to protect a weak minor that is your trading partner, surround their planet with 8 freighters. The AI will mass its ships around the minors' planet, but be unable to invade.

If you are doing this, I prefer freighters to scouts, as scouts have a mainenance of 1, but freighters have a maintenance of 0.

If I decide to do a wall, I use colony ships. I already build them to keep my worlds morale up when they become to crowded. Plenty of those, and they are maintence 0.
