Another New Poll

We got another one! Lots of good choices on this one, but I had to say ship design. Loved that element to SFC III.

Good options, but i prefere Ship Design over MP.
As I once or twice said: I want shipyard back ;)
Fleet battle would be cool too, but not as in MoO3
"Space Terrain"? as in Nebulas??

Ship design for me too. Would love to be able to change elements of the ships before launching them.

Actually I would like to see all of the above except multi-player. Since I was forced to choose, the order of preference is:

1) ship design
2) fleet battles
3) space terrain
4) more colony management
5) 3d engine
6) multiplayer

I'll go with Bromoser on that order of preference. :)

I kind of like to see a 3d engine, kind of which GCII have all the features.

I just don't see this as a multi-player game. I know a lot of people expect a multi-player aspect from every game these days, but some games just don't call for it.
So, let's say ship design, but as a branch on the tech tree.(i.e. the more you research, the more design aspects you control)

Since people are posting lists here are mine

Things I like to see

1) 3D Engine
3) Colony Management
2) Space Terrain

Things I would not miss

1) Ship Design "I do not build ships now or engage in wars"
2) Multiplayer "Some people may like or require on line games it is not for me."
3) Fleet Actions "Not sure if it has to do with wars I will likely avoid it"

ship design would be fine...

Something like in Pax Imperia perhaps, where you could choose your ship graphics set AND could create your own ship types regarding weapons, propulsion, shields, repair, etc..

What i would really really really like would be the possibility to create your own opponents regarding appearance, abilities, boni, winning strategies, trustworthiness, shipset (something like in Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire...)

I agree with SLW, why does Multiplayer have to factor into every game these days? I was pleased to see it appearing at the bottom of most peoples lists.

I was thinking... what would be the point of Ship Design as things stand? We'd have to have a much different kind of combat system for that to work properly wouldn't we?

Personally, I voted for a deeper Colony Management system, but would have voted for Fleet Battles as well, makes combat more fun than the old Civ style combat

Oh yes, and please for the love of god don't copy MOO3 for Fleet Battles... it was terrible... might as well have been a cheap budget RTS game for the fun I had with that part of the game

1) Ship Design "I do not build ships now or engage in wars"

It's interesting that it dawned on me while reading Technician's post that I do tend to stay out of war and am a "builder" for the most part. So why did I pick ship building as my number 1 item for GCII. I think my modified wants list goes as follows:

1. Colony Management - Needed when you control both mature and new/immature planets.
2. Ship Design - Still important, ship design where you could increase your freighters cargo holds or its speed/defense to increase survivability.
3. 3D Engine - Extremely nice to have but not at the cost of core components of the game. tech tree, diplomacy, trade, culture, etc.
4. Space Terrain - I'd assume you would need a 3D engine to effectively have this as an option.
5. Fleet Battles - I'd assume this would be better in 3D as well. However, if this isn't done well, it could be potentially a tedious part of the game.
6. Multiplayer - this is the only one that don't care at all about.

I really don't play with ships either, but I think I would to a much greater degree if I could design them myself

It could be nice to be able to design colony ship with fixed amount of colonist without resorting to create mods. Maybe useful if design can be save from one game to another.

Lets face it, most of us do not play with ships because we don't need them and it takes too much time. My biggest request isn't on the list. Make the ai more aggressive in demanding things when the human player's military stinks. Make the AI attack the human if he's weak militarily on occasion even with Good relations. Make the Ai better able to utilize its ships offensively and defensively. Make the ai respond to culture bombing. Design a defense for the terror star or make the computer automatically go to war and attack it if it gets 10 spaces from their colony.

The idea that one can easily win a game with no military time after time after time again signals a weakness in gameplay.

So what are the current numbers for this poll? All I see on the home page is the voting options...I'd like to see how the options are stacking up against each other now I've voted.

Strange thing about the polls. I browse this page from a few computers at home and at work. I think only the machine I voted on displays the running totals.

Interesting poll but needs some context:

Ship design only makes sense if the combat system is changed to make it important. If combat is changed to make ship combat actually *interesting* then ship design may or may not be a great feature depending on how well they balance the real ship features. Right now these ships are nothing more than numbers tossed at one another. There's no balance of swarms of fighters taking out capitals, there's no weapon type triangles, there's nothing in GC1 to make me think that Stardock has a clue how to implement combat combined with ship design that means anything fun.

Fleet battles, huh? Could we be any more vague. Does this mean we'll drop into a tactical combat mode similar to the Age of Wonders game, does this mean we'll see values stack to make combo-unit? I can't even begin to comment on whether this is important without some description of where they're going with it. If they were giving us something like AOW I'd be all over fleet battles as one of better improvements, but if all they're talking about is stacked combat I don't care.

Multiplayer I can guarantee that I'll never use so I don't care.

3D Engine has potential but I'm not at all convinced that a game like this will benefit from such a thing. Strategy games are about cleanliness of interface and 2D often works best for that.

Space terrain and more involved colony management seem to be no brainers. I don't want to see too much micromanagement involved but there is room to tweak the vanilla "every planet looks the same" that exists now.

I guess out of these if my personal interpretation of what they mean is right I'm most for tactical fleet battles as that's what makes combat interesting.

If you take a look to the following link http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=132094, you will see that there are some concerns about specializing planets/ avoiding wasting BC with building nothing on some planets while building critical improvement on others.

Lately, I have found that we have a dumb spying system, even when it is supposed to give advanced insight where you are supposed to knew everything about the AI
- you don't know the starbases locations in the general map if there is FOW. But you can find them in the diplomacy screen
- when conducting diplomacy, you don't know what are the modules implemented on starbase. And the funny thing is that this information is available on the general map is there isn't any FOW on the starbase
- you can't spy the minor AIs. Which is annoying when you are searcing who are their trading partner.
- you don't have access to planetary screen for the AI worlds. For information, this feature was allowed in ALpha Centauri. Even if you are supposed to know everything, we don't know what is built (military and social) on the AI planets. It could be nice to know (with enough spying) which planets are currently building Trade Goods/Wonder. And maybe with enough spying the ETA on AI's production and research

I voted fleet battles because that's the only way you can get interesting combined arms tactics implemented. Ship design: Suppose you designing 2 ships, one to kill enemy ships A, and one against ship B. And then you meet 2 enemy ships in the same location, and can't say your anti A ship should strike ship A and anti B ship should strike ship B... To me fleet combat is a prerequisite to ship design. Ship design will be mostly uninteresting if you haven't got fleets. A simple MOO1-like combat or an even simpler Call To Power combat (better for MP) would be fine.
Note that fleet combat allows combined arms, like using warper ships with long distance attack ships in MOO.
