Planetary Defenses

I was wondering something. If you have a system with two colonies. You build planetary defenses on one, and then on the other, is this cummilitive, or is the newer one just a waste of money.

I am not the greatest player

but the planetary defenses on both planets will work with each other.
I do not use planetary defenses often so i could be wrong but i doubt it
