Help a newbie

I am having problems with strategy. I have played on easy to learn how to play and the game was as it said easy. I took over the universe by culture and a little war.
However now I am trying on simple. All races set to sub normal, and I get creamed every game. Everyone goes to war with me and attacks every turn. Even my maxed out starbases are destroyed by corvettes(many of them)
Where am I going wrong? I tried making ships, but they come along with a corvette and destroy all of my defenses. any ideas?

To keep the AI from attacking, you can doa few things to improve your realtinos with them. First, be the same alignment as them. If you are good, the Good races tend to leave you alone. Trading with the AI is very important. They will like you better if your frieghters are going their way. Then you can also provide bribes to the AI through the Diplomatic screen either as a monetary bribe or by giving them a technologiy or two. Having neutral or better relations helps to keep the AI from attacking you.

One thing that can help you: divide and conquer. If you manage to put the AIs at war between them, they probably won't go after you.

About starbase: don't rely on starbase to keep the AI busy. But instead, use it to suppport your navy (which is less costly to build than a constructor): a simple starfighter in a sector where there are starbases that increase attack rating of friendly ships can be dangerous.

If you explained what you do, it would help understand what you do wrong.
If you get destroyed by corvettes, start researching towards frigates. Build ships to make you feared by the ai, not to fight them.
Trade with them. Pick one or two partners, and trade. Also, mercilessly exploit the minors.
Starbases need some +defense modules, and one or two are usually anough to get rid of puny corvettes, but only if they have time to repair themselves afterwards (you need +repair techs for that). After that, the best defense is to keep ships near your starbases to protect them and strike incoming ships before they hit the base.
