Are there more details about trade and not being a UP member?

Somewhere, I don't remember where, I read that the plan was to terminate all trade routes of a race that suddenly found themselves no longer a UP member with UP members. For instance, can they establish trade routes with other non-UPers? Should this be allowed? Why, or why not?

Yes, you read this correctly and it's actually already been implemented (Though it really only applies to humans, since aliens wont leave the UP). If you leave, trade routes are broken and you can no longer send a freighter into a alien starsystem (you can make them, but it ends up being a waste of money).

As for Non-UP races trading with other non-up races...I'm not sure. It's pretty foolish to leave the UP, since the laws it enforces do more good than harm, so I doubt there's any instance where a race could really justify breaking off.

The simplest way to do it is just to disable trade for non-up races. It's a big deal to disband from the United Planets, and this is the best way to drive that point home. I'll need some Brad input, though. since I'm not sure what his thoughts are on the matter. :)

What is the upside of dropping out? That is to say, why is it an option at all?

As the game progresses, your civilization may be held to a number of rules it disagree's with. When you're not allowed to attack enemy freighters, prevented from probing anomalies outside your sector, and restricted to upgrading starbases with no more than 3 military modules...you may start to feel resentment towards the United Planets.

This is where you'll always have the option of leaving the UP Councel. You will be free from following their rules, but will lose the ability to trade with the other races. And, once out, the player won't be able to (easilly) get back into the United Planets. This will make players think twice before leaving.
