Dread Lords and Excaliburs

Now that was something to behold... I was about three turns from my tech victory when one of my best planets turned into a Dread Lords planet. Needless to say, I lowered tech spending to a minimum to take up the challenge.
Not that they really stood a chance, even with the Excaliburs they started to build, as I controlled 80% of the large galaxy I played on (22 planets under my control, 4 Altarian and 1 Drath systems) and could crank out 1 Excalibur every 5 turns on max spending on my most productive planet...
However, there was a slight inconvenience - a little everywhere, strange sovereign-class ships appeared that started picking off my starbases, and as I had no military at all at that time, they had 5 turns to wreak havoc before I could build up any matching resistance.
When my shining new Excaliburs had dispatched the newcomers, I set off to rid the universe of the Dread Lords. They had already done a lot more damage than I had anticipated, and their arrogance tugged at my nerves. They refused any deals, saying that they respected my military might but that I should get lost.
When I arrived at the Dread Lords' star system, battle was already raging, and it wasn't going well for the Altarians and Draths. Their death knights were no match for the Dread Lord's Excaliburs. Confident in my own small fleet of Excaliburs, I rushed through the chaos and was utterly defeated. Overconfident again... humbled and definitely p***** off, I took the time to check what I did wrong. And I did not have to look long: my Excaliburs were simply a lot less powerful that theirs... 750 attack and 70 defense against 550 attack and 60 defense, that called for some backup.
A couple of turns later and a new fleet of 10 Excaliburs backed with a militarily maxed-out starbase, I finally conquered the Dread Lords, and got my well deserved tech victory. I'm looking foward to the next opportunity to kick some Dread Lords a**, it put a little action in an otherwise unchallening game
