It crossed my mind

I was standing in line at the bank
waiting with everyone else to do their
business,
there was only one teller and she was helping
an old lady, it was all so polite and courteous,
Barbara, the teller, a beautiful black woman,
lays the money down orderly with the quick swoosh
sound of counting money fast,
it was lot of money, hundreds and fifties, she scoops
it up and hands it over to the old woman
who then stuffs it in an inside pocket in her winter
coat,
she turns and leaves as if no one can see her
as if I didn’t see the stack of bills and hear the
teller count it out, as if I wouldn’t follow her out
and steal her coat, and pay my doctor bill or catch up
with my dealer or buy a winning lotto ticket—finally,
of course, I didn’t do that, steal her coat and spend her money
or pay my doctor, but just for a second,
it crossed my mind.
