What do aliens get when theytrade for no tech?

When the Aliens offer to trade "tech X" for "nothing listed on my side" are they just giving the tech to me? Or if i agree to the trade am I giving a tech to them but i just dont know which one?

Yes, it is at least my understanding they are simply giving you a gift. You doing the same thing in reverse of course is one way to improve relations. The game simply uses confusing language, saying they wish to trade.
