When you start a new game, you can choose what alignment the various races should have by adjusting the sliders. If you want to not know in advance, you use the randomize buttons. However, there's nothing to tell you wether one or the other is active (if you understand what I mean).
Wether you choose to set the values yourself or you choose random, there should be some sort of visual feedback on the screen.
