Latest Apple earnings require liquid cooling

"For March, we are looking for US$3.0 billion in revenues (versus consensus of $3.2 billion), and EPS of $0.22 (versus consensus of $0.24), which is based on 4.6 million iPods. Using a different set of assumptions, including iPod units of 5.7 million, we believe that Apple could deliver EPS upside of $0.04 to $0.05 higher than our published estimate. We believe that investors looking for more potential upside than this will be disappointed."

Banc of America Securities analyst Keith Bachman couldn't have been any more off base when he wrote that in a recent research note. After market close Wednesday, Apple reported a more than sixfold increase in fiscal second-quarter profit on unflagging sales of its iPod music player. The company earned $290 million, or 34 cents per share, on sales of $3.24 billion in the three months ended March 26. Analysts had been expecting Apple to report earnings of 24 cents per share on revenue of $3.2 billion, according to First Call. It was a blowout, plain and simple. Apple shipped some 5.3 million iPods during the quarter, a 558 percent increase from a year ago. More astonishing were Apple's overall computer sales; the company sold 1 million Macs -- a four-year high and 43 percent increase over the same period last year. Forty percent of those were sold to customers who had never owned a Mac before. Apple shares have been on a tear for months, but instead of cheering the latest news, investors started worrying about whether Apple's success was sustainable. Still, Apple is emerging as a more balanced growth story. And if its Tiger operating system proves to be everything the company claims, Apple could be headed for a banner 2005.
