How can I increase my ship range?

In my current game I decided to move down to a Medium map. Built a couple Battleships and realized that on a Medium map, that 0 Range really means Zero! Hmmm, an attack-oriented ship that can't actually get anywhere to attack. Pretty frustrating.

I know I can build starbases in every sector between me and my enemy, but that's not very cost-effective and makes them an obvious target to cripple me again.

Any suggestions? What techs or improvements can I build to extend my ship's range? Or do I need to just wait for Ranger tech?

Well, the first two obvious range boosting techs are controlled gravity and gravity mastering. Both are not too high on the tree. Just follow the blue tech path. And you don't need a starbase in every sector. On autopilot, your ships can go to any white-outlined sector, even if there is a gap in the middle of two areas. They will just cross the gap on autopilot. So, you just need an advanced base held by a couple of frigates or something and then autopilot the battleships to it.

I believe there is also a civilization ability you can choose when you start a game.

You can also use Starbases to extend your range

Thanks to all responders. Definitely helps to know this stuff. Not so eager to rush to Battleship if I won't be able to do anything with them. Got to think BIG picture ...

Starbases carry about a 3 radius range boost so you can space them accordingly

No they don't. It depends on map size. On medium, it's about 0.
