I keep getting hammered

Hello, I've brought up the difficulty a bit, but now I'm getting completely owned, I could really use some advice, pretty please?
(all intellegent/medium/scattered/uncommon).
I ussualy play as a Pacifist with +4 Social and Millitary Build and +25% Luck. I go hard after trade and expand to 3 or 4 planets ASAP (if I see 'em). I always build one base near the most likely trade route (seems to survive longer than my colonies) and get a Economic Capital as early as the AI. But alas when the others see how little research I have they start asking for tribunes . . . and the rest is all bad. I figure I must be doing something majorly wrong any suggestions please (I can't sleep at night thinking about it!)
It would be real great if some of the top players had a work-shop thread . . .
