Going to purchase GalCiv - Want your input

I'm one of those guys that doesnt' always rush to get the latest RPG, or scramble to shell out for an online RPG game

i like GOOD games, that are somewhat original, i play subspace (its called continuum now www.subspacehq.com) and i also play uplink (www.introversion.co.uk)

don't worry, those aren't stragegy games ;)

i've been reading the interviews the lead author of GC has done, hes made his aims clear about this game, and it sounds great to me

When it comes to strategy games, i like ones with lots of diplomacy and such, thus, i think i'll like this one quite a bit

but i want ur input before i buy this
BTW, if anyone could provide me with the abandoneware version of the OLD GC, that would be nice, i've been looking for a "demo" or something like that for a while, but anyways, i'd love to hear what you've done with ur game and some cool things that i should know about :D

or even some bad things that i should know about....

Right now it is in beta, so if you're getting it strictly to play, I'd wait. The only reason to buy it early is because youw ant to get it immediately (on purchasing you get to download it right away) and be able to provide input.

Beta 2 is the currently available version of GalCiv and it's still fairly primitive IMO.

I have played space strategy games for 15+ years and RPG since the days of Wizardry and Exodus were newly released. Although right now this game is a work in progress, it IS revolutionary.

On the one hand you may not like it because your tactics on the other space strategy games will not work here....you will lose a lot at first because the AI's are smarter than that.

On the other hand, the ideas are NEW ideas, not simply rehashed old ones. So if you for something that is really not a carbon copy of something else.....get this.

Most importantly this is a beta which means it isn't completely finished. But this beta is very special. In this beta your ideas and suggestions for the game get CONSIDERED and might be put in the game. If you ever had a desire to influence a game that will be on a WAL-MART shelf, this is your opportunity.

Pay the 70 bucks and get drengin.net You get about a half dozen games in addition to GALCIV. Theres about 500+ MBS of on-the-shelf quality software.

During work hours the board is not that active as most people are at work.

The game is still in beta but playable with some major features still being worked on.
With the future developments planned it will be a great game. Diplomacy is not complete in the current build.

Although Stardock does not impose a NDA it is difficult to give advice about purchase of the game seeing as it is not finished yet.

My advice is that if you are interested in being involved in the beta I would say buy it. If you are looking for a finished game to play from day 1 wait until galciv is released.

The old version of GC was build for OS/2 and will only run on OS/2 as it used extensive multithreading.
(I think it even stretched what OS/2 could do with threads)

The difference between just Galciv and the Drengin network is that the drengin network has some other games available now. Check out www.drengin.net

The download is not that bad as long as you have a reasonable connection.

Hope this helps
btw I am not connected to Stardock I am just a fellow gamer

Well, I was paying attention to the boards today, but I figured that he wanted user input, so I didn't comment. :)

But now that there have been user comments, I'll throw in my two cents. Considering that there's constantly shouts of "Come here, you've got to see this! This is so cool!" going on in this office, I think it's a pretty cool game. :)

One thing that has not been mentioned yet is the GalCiv Library. If you have an idea for a new tech, anomaly, ship, social improvement, or star base module, you can build the files, try it on your copy of galciv, and when ready, submit it to the GalCiv library to make it available for everyone else.

sounds very nice, but i'll be able to get the final release for free when it comes out if i buy the beta right?

if i do buy it, i guess i'll wait until beta 3 for when diplomacy should mean a little more right?

Why wait? The Beta 3 build should be coming soon. Some download problems have occured from time to time and you may be dissappointed if you have not checked out the DGM to make sure it works. Be ready.

A subscription to the Drengin.net, which includes the DGM, lasts for a year. That includes all the games, the GalCiv beta through release and all upgrades, the Metgaverse, and the library.

"That includes all the games, the GalCiv beta through release and all upgrades, the Metgaverse, and the library. "

Sorry, hit the send button too soon. That should read:

"That includes all the games, the GalCiv beta through release and all upgrades, the Metgaverse, and the library to the end date of your subscription."

well, u've bought me :)

from the reviews i've read, it sounds like a very innovative game that i want to play/check out

i sure hope that you put better anti-piracy methods/tech into this game :P

i hate buying a game, only to learn that the guy next to me plays for free :P

i dont' mind paying for games, but i don't want to feel cheated lol

i'll buy the game asap :D

There will always be piracy.

However, we have one advantage: Since we're going to be putting out MEANINGFUL updates after release we can make sure tha tonly registered users can get them.

So even if someone does crack the game and distribute it somehow, they'll be stuck on a particular version.

ok, still, i'd rather you put online authentication in it lol

The online verification is already there. Have you noticed that you had to "log on" to this forum to participate in the discussion? When you buy your subscription to Drengin.net you have to initially enter your subscription number to use it. (Since I don't know how this works when GC is purchased without the DGM I can't comment on it, but there are a few on this forum that have, and can comment.) The authentication is there. The theory is that the pirated versions will become obsolete with extreme rapidity. Just think about being able to tell your friend that got the pirated version "Wow, Did you ever miss out. The current game is SOO MUCH better than what you got. If you paied anything at all for that pirated version YOU are the one that got RIPPED OFF, not me."

Jack's right, We are going to make sure that the updates are so cool and new that any true GalCiv fan will have to own a copy. Plus all the user content that I personally can't wait for, the Starwars or Startrek mods for example is what I am waiting for. :-)

Of course you will need galciv version 1.xxx to play it :-)
