More Unsolicited and Untested Advice

(for all my fellow writers)

If you write and
picture your audience
you’re done for

if you write and already
know the ending
stop there

if you write and
worry about how it’ll
all be interpreted
then pack it up, Jim

there’s a reason why
it’s called writing
in the present tense

the act is freeing
empowering
and a damned good time killer

sometimes its
capturing a moment
or even a mood

or trying to put into words
the divine

the words may be
incapable
you may fall woefully
short
and you may never
exactly nail it all on the
head
but that’d be like
reading every book
you every wanted,

once that was
accomplished,
then what?

As the lead
scratches over the
paper
barely stopping
long enough
to review

keep writing

it will be your
record

your reminder
your legacy

and remember
it is yours

no one else will
care about it or for it
like you do

even
especially
after you die

your writing is all yours

die and it goes with you

Unless
you’re a real talent

then they’ll keep
cranking it out
in special editions
long after you’re cold.

Not me.

I want to be here
to defend
the errant love letter
the indecipherable scrawl

the curve upward
and inward

and not leave it to
others to understand.

Besides,
how could they?

These weren’t written
for them.

Excellent. Especially the first three stanzas. I felt them...fit, yes, they fit me to a T. Well, well done!

Thanks for reading, Shovelheat. Tricky to write as though no one is watching when I know it's going into the blog, but that's the challenge.
