Thinking about...

Thinking about what you say in a forum post. I visit this site everyday, and I constantly see people verbally abusing each other. Is it too much too ask that we get along with each other? It's okay to have a different opinion and disagree with other people, but is it necessary to bash and ridicule your opponent on the forums? Where is the community that I first visited 2 years ago? People went out of their way to help others back then, not so much now though it seems. I just wish members would remember that there are people on the other side of your monitors out there on the net, and these people are just that.. people. Show show some courtesy and respect to your fellow site members!! It doesn't cost a thing.

I know, you are probably thinking to yourself right now, what the hell does he know, go away why don't you. But I am a subscriber, and I pay to interact with members on WC, just like a lot of other members, and I am here to stay. WC is supposed to be the premier skinning community on the net, so lets get that old community spirit back, shall we?

I've been here twice as long and it was friendlier back then. Yes we had some scrapes but they did seem a lot less. Jafo might say that was because we had less members then. That might be part of the reason but I think we knew and respected each other more. But who knows

You know Bones, you're right, and I am unfortunately guilty of what your describing in more than one instance..

I suppose getting up and walking away from the keyboard for a moment could help, a minute to think about it before a less than acceptible reply gets fired off to something that really shouldn't matter so much, but for some reason it does..

All I can really say is I agree and can only promise to make the effort..

Any other takers?

Hi, Bones....

Actually....I think it's a case of 'rose-coloured glasses' ....bitching and in-fighting, aka 'grief' has always been part of the skinning scene....I remember loads of it on skinz.org, before Wincusto even started....

If anything, it's possibly better now than it was then......

......or am I just getting conditioned to it?.....

I lurked for quite a while before ever posting. I think I've only posted for maybe two years now. The reason was, back then, reading the posts it seemed like such a tightnit community that I felt like I would be intruding into personal conversations amongst a group of friends. I did see threads from time to time that turned into free-for-alls until Jafo stepped on a few necks.
There's so many more subsrcibers now and I think everybody has a bad day from time to time. From time to time a real Troll pops up but doesn't last long.

Sometimes the most innocuous things can push someone else's button.
I've only seen a few threads recently where someone set out to to go after another person from the start. Most of the time it seems that someone overreacts to some mild criticism and it snowballs from there.

Excellent idea DZ. Conrats on the promotion, btw.

Hi Wom, jam, and gm!

Jafo... There might be some conditioning involved.

Too bad there wasn't a way to record how hard and fast the keys were hit during the creation of a post (i.e. pounding on the keys), and adding that to the form! This way, it can be added to the database. Once a thread got to threat level burnt sienna (we will push the terror alert everywhere! ) the thread could stop accepting posts for a while, or be flagged requiring all posts to be approved until the K.P.T.L. (Key Pounding Threat Level) reached sea-foam green.

Most of the people here are kind, curteous, decent, and respectful, and I think that most know right off the bat whose comments to take less seriously than others. As for new artists posting, I just seriously hope that if the more mature, experienced members see a less-than-helpful-to-downright-mean comment, that they step in and at least offer some constructive criticism. Not everyone is thick skinned - slick skinner. (That's your tongue twister for the day! )

Alright, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I agree, Bones. Life is too short to bash and be bashed. I've altered my approach to some degree, and realized that those that are pulling the strings here, really are doing their best. I'm proud to be a member of this community.

Yes, well said, Tom. And you get my vote!

Sure there's some verbal sparring on here, but if you compare WC to just about anyplace else (Dev-art, flexbeta, etc...) this is still about the friendliest place on the net.

I've also seen that it's very easy to post a comment that seems funny (if a little sarcastic) to you, but once it's in written form, without the benefit of voice inflection or body language to convey the humor intended, gets misinterpreted. Throw in cultural differences and language barriers (English isn't everyone's native language) and it's easy to see how an off-hand comment can start a flame war. Jafo and the other admins do a great job of keeping the forums pretty civil.

I don't know if there's still the cross-posting issue with JU blogs getting posted on WC, but it's a little more of a free-for-all in their forums. I only follow a couple 'posters' there just because I don't feel the need to have an insult throwing contest after a long day at work.

tjesterb thinks if he wants to argue with someone all the time. he'll get married again.

(see, I thought that was funny, so all of you with great marriages.....it was just a joke )

Thanks all! I agree tjesterb, the Admins do a wonderful job. Just a reminder is all, lol. Good luck on the hunt for your next wife.
