The Noisemakers

This is a life overloaded
with question-asking children
in a house that needs a payment
just one of the many
bills that need attention

and there are computers to
be silenced
and books to be read
as my son watches cable TV
I calculate mentally
how much does that cost per day
per hour
per second

and my wife and daughter
will be back soon
from Stater Brothers
so in this moment I steal
I become reacquainted

with the process of
slowing quieting
the maelstrom swirling
around my mind
and I cannot remember
this life
prior to all these
noisemakers

it seems that there is always
something

requiring my attention
requiring my validation

even a TV needs me
to give it meaning

these papers and pencils
cry out for me
to give them purpose

my head aches and says
“See? Thank God
you ache so you know
we’re still here”

How could I forget?

I imagine heaven
is very much like
this place

only a little quieter
and more orderly
for shorter stretches
of time.
