Ship models

To my knowledge (from browsing the boards) the ships are rendered in full 3D, but are displayed top-down, correct?

What a big waste...surely there's a way of using all the pretty graphics? Having the ships tilt while turning? Or have them rock (like a boat on choppy waves) whilst moving forward? Something to show off all the hard work put into the models, in otherwords...

It'd be a neat idea :d

When you use 2D graphics, you have to pre-render the graphics, so all of the ships are pre-rendered to a top down view.  To add additional animation, we'd have had to render those too.  It would be a lot more work to do what you suggest, or even to just re-render them at a different angle.

Ahhh... :notsure:

But I swore I read something about you guys making detailed 3d models?

And on another note: Ooo! Someone from Stardock answered me! Yay! :CONGRAT:

We have all the models in their 3D state, as they were created in 3D Studio Max.  To get them into Gal Civ 1, we had to render bitmaps of the ship rotating in the different directions, then run them through our program that encodes the data.
