Huge Population Gain After Invasion

Hi all, First post here - bought the game online, played for a couple of weeks so still learning all of the quirks.
Up until the last day or so, I have played economic / cultural only just to see what it was like playing without any military. Well, yesterday for a change of pace I decided to invade Scottlingas after getting bored with trying to flip the system they were in.
I can go back to the save game if anyone needs exact numbers, but they had a pop of about 8000 and I had one transport. I did info warfare invasion , got a decent roll on the 'press spacebar' odds, and won. After the invasion, the planet somehow ended up with about 100,000 population (and morale of 1). Is this somehow remotely possible with the randomization? I just assumed you would only have a possible ending population somewhere between 0 and the sum of your transports and the original population...
Anyway, it was interesting to see since it showed up on the star map as a blob about 3 sectors across. Since I was already bankrupting and destabilizing the Yor, I gave them the planet, hoping to bring their average morale down even further. Although it roughly doubled to tripled their total population, it didn't have as dramtic effect on their morale as I had hoped (other than possibly keping it at a low level).
I've monitored for a couple dozen turns now, and the planet DID get the angry/frowny face icon, continued to stay at 1% morale, but hasn't flipped. Also, the population shrinks by about 600-800 per turn.
So anyway, I haven't invaded enough to know if this is a normal but rare outcome, anomaly, or bug. Thoughts?
