ship ranges?

Well I was waiting for someone else to start this discussion but as it hasn't recently appeared here goes.

How do people find the infinite ship ranges affecting their games?

Personally I find two problems with this

(a) extremely rapid expansion spread out everywhere across the galaxy.

(b) no sense of borders in wars.

The rapid expansion is not a huge problem if all races focus on expansion at the start. It is still very annoying though when a system near you in a corner of the map suddenly becomes an enemy system. A more range based expansion could enhance the game keeping colonisation important till later stages of the game and allowing empires to grow in a steady fashion.

The war problem is very annoying. Once you are at war enemy ships can attack ANY planet and ANY trade route in your whole territory. There is no sense of a border between empires or of cohesion.

Possible changes:

1. Add a range based on sectors from nearest controlled sector.

2. Add a range based on distance from nearest controlled planet (or even nearest shipyard).

3. Add fuel to ships (major pain in butt).

I like option 2. Similar to ships in Birth of the Federation. No fuel to worry about but succeeds in giving a feeling of an empire and borders.

Or 4. Leave it as it is.

:)

Personally, I dont like ranges, it only slows things down IMO.

Perhaps we can do as in the OS/2-version, and make it optional?

I really liked the way ranges worked on OS2, including having it as an option. I liked that I could use it and those that didn't like it didn't have to use it. I also liked that there were techs that would increase a ships range.

The OS/2 version on Ship Ranges is the best bet. You can have it either way by selecting before the game starts.

Put my signature under Paul's append.
BTW, I like most the way it was in OS/2.

Hope Brad can handle the AI/routes complexities.
