AI, Metaverse, Research, and Anomalies

I'm wondering about having the AI use the tech path used by the top Metaverse scorers. Although I'm not one yet, I expect to be in the top 20 eventually. In any case, a very rough guideline that I'm currently using is: Keeping an eye out for things that will get me to Battleship, take techs that can be completed quickly. However, whenever exploring a research anomaly, change research to the tech that will take the most time, keeping an eye out for speed enhancing tech.
Now this method seems to work well for me -- but I can imagine it leading the AI to do some stupid things, *unless* the AI also changes the tech it is working on before exploring a research anomaly. Also, the AI should seek out these anomalies with some preference (skipping a +2 hitpoint anomaly if it is sufficiently out of the way of a research anomaly).
The only way I see out of this is to get rid of the research anomaly, or to scale it down so that it only gives about 6 months of research instead of completing the project no matter what it is.
This is the problem with ranges too. The AI is much more difficult when there are ranges than when there is an unlimited range.
And in the I'd really like to see this before GCWin goes gold, I'd like to see some way to mark the mini-map so that I could say "there is a system worth colonizing here" or "There is a research anomaly here" or "No use looking here for anything" I'd just like a few colors that I could use -- *don't* have any preset codes, just let me mark a sector orange if I want to, or teal, or some other colors.
Thanks for listening to my rambling.
