Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment has announced that they have sold off The Matrix Online, along with the rights to some DC Comics games, to Sony Online Entertainment. The deal comes after the game was plagued with numerous problems including a tainted license, publisher change (Ubisoft to SEGA), delayed launch and bad sales figures.
Variety reports that The Matrix Online was only able to sell around 43,000 units since its release in late March and that WBIE spent around $20 million in its first outing. Currently unknown is what Sony plans to do with their new franchise and publishing rights to games based on DC Comics.
Developer Monolith has been rumored to have had serious layoffs since the game's failure and the status of its upcoming title, F.E.A.R., is currently unknown. Hopefully WBIE can do better with its Batman Begins offerings that came out this week.
