     Way back in Jun 04 I wrote a bit about AOL's sketchy practice of marketing their Kid's Only Rooms as "a safe environment on the Net" all the while knowing that it was like putting up a giant sign saying "All the little kiddies are right here!" for the net pedophiles. AOL still reaps huge profit from unsavvy parents this way but finally someone else has shed a bit of light on this practice by another Net business concern : Yahoo.

     See the deal was that on Yahoo! Chat you could make a room with any sort of name you wanted under any of their heading like "education" or "School". Pedophiles moved in ffast and they quickly became a swap meet for porn and a place to "groom" kids for potential meets.

     Yahoo of course had no interest in shutting this down because Yahoo Chat is a massive ad revenue generator. The more people using more of it's rooms the more money it made. This practice was recently exposed causing yahoo to disallow the practice of creating your own rooms anywhere is Yahoo Chat. Maybe someone at a major new station will wake up and take a look at AOL too?

     The bottom line is that we as a society insist on ID only to verify that you are over a certain age and have no mechanism for verifying that a Net user is under a certain age. This ensures that sites which cater to children are merely concentrators for adults posing as children for sexual purposes. Without a "Minor ID" card or something similar there are no safe places for kids on the net. Anywhere.

Very disturbing. Now I have a valid reason not to yahoo. maybe I'll put a 'do you yahoo, then you need to check this (link to story)' on my emails.

I'm also suspicious of the reactions of Brawny, State Farm, etc but especially Diet Pepsi.
Business prudence dictates you verify and consistently check on ad placement to make sure you're getting what you paid for. They had to know. Now I'm wondering about Pepsi's 'new generation' campaign they had.

I will be sending the info out to some of my relatives - they're older and really into sending stuff all over on distribution lists (not spam).

Really makes the 'bleeding heart liberal' in me want to rear it's ugly head.

You would be surprised actually. Yahoo is a wide ranging business affair. They probably didn't get quite that far down into the nuts and bolts of it to be fair. Yahoo sure did though.

I don't know. If it was me and I wanted ads placed, I'd want to know where they are placing them since I'm paying for it. I'd also go in and check to make sure my ads are where they said they would be. That would lead me to the discovery that I needed to hurt someone.

I can't really buy the 'I didn't know' defense if the opportunity to know was not utilized.

Heh, I'd point you over to all the outraged "BUSH THE MERCILESS IS PUSHING 'NUMBER OF THE BEAST' ID CARDS" blogs. The far-rights hate the idea of ID's, and the far left hates the idea. Libertarians believe that social security numbers are even illegal and an infringment of rights.

So... I'm thinking you won't get any kind of verifiable ID for kids any time soon, unless we sensible people oppress a bit more. In the meantime we'll either take people's words for it, or insist on credit card numbers which just lets people steal our identities.

What you said is right most likely, but AOL will probably never be thoroughly investigated primarily because of certain things I can't say at the moment but you can find out if you search the internet long and hard enough...I'll help everyone who reads this out and give you a website to start with...Link

You can definately read alot about the conspiracy of things like that and much more there.

There is actually someone who links Masons and Satanists together? My dad was a Mason. He wasn't anything like a satanist. Who ever this person is, could use an education. Mason are linked with Shriners who have helped thousands of handicapp children lead the best life possible. I myself was a Rainbow Girl. We learned about Love, Duty and respect. They are the daughters of Masons. I guess it takes all kinds. Thanks for the heads up on the link.

Thanks Bichur and greywar. It certainly is eye opening. If my dad were alive, he would be laughing his butt off. It's funny how people label everything they don't know or understand a conspiracy or evil. There is enough of those things without adding to it with that kind of garbage. Next this guy and his followers will be claiming Hospice is a conspiracy too! Some people sure give the devil alot of attention and power. I prefer to look at the light side of life.

well i can say i really never heard about this before up until now.....and would like to say that pedophiles are the scum of the earth and parasites....Yahoo really needs to look at its marketing practices....for if they dont they to will become bottom feeders....

Well in point of fact and in the interest of fairness Yahoo has discontinued this practice since it was revealed in the light of day. Others still continue including big guns like Coke, Pepsi, and other brands which cater to kids. They very frequently set up chat areas on their websites which have the same problems. Unfortunately I think a great many of the folks setting this up have simply never thought it through to it's horrifying yet logical conclusion.

In all fairness, why did they wait until it was revealed?
After all the previous news articles covering chatrooms throughout the yrs, they either knew or should have known.

If I were to set up for chat rooms and announced they would be "a safe environment on the net", I'd make damn sure they were.

That's the first thought I had. Can you imagine the public reaction to ID cards for Children? Not jsut the far-rights fear of the #, but practical fears. How much info would be on them? Would it pose a threat to kids? (Pedophiles could hack into the database and "shop" for what they wanted-then track down the child in real life)

I agree with you that ID cards would probably lead to more children being exposed to predators, and on the other hand, I think it would help. But to say the IDs are Bush's number of the beast cards is just plain silly. In order to be the number of the beast, it would have to be mandatory for everyone in the world to get it. Adults as well as kids. And while we already have social security numbers, Bush had nothing to do with. If I was worried about this type of thing, social security would be the one I would worry about. Newborn children can't even leave the hospital without a ss number.

--Well, ironically, there are procedures,not requiered, to implant chips to a child or pet, to track them...it costs a bloody fortune but it is able to track them anywhere to my knowledge....

     True but all the same cons go with them. My point here is not that we need kids ID cards but rather that allowing young kids unsupervised Net access is akin to letting them go downtown unsupervised.

How about social security numbers as a way of verifying age? SSN should be able to verify the age of someone, even though it may take a while. After all, when you apply for a number you provide certain information, like a birth date, right? Ive had mine for so long I don't remember what I needed to do, but I remember that I was underage, so I know you don't have to be an adult to get one.
