MTV has announced that it has purchased the insanely popular tween site NeoPets. According to the Associated Press, NeoPets has accumulated over 25 million members with 60 percent of them being over the age of 13 in just over five years.
NeoPets has created a virtual world called Neopia for the users to raise virtual pets. The players gain NeoPoints by playing games, creating art or clicking on ads, thus giving them money to spoil their furry friends. With the acquisition of NeoPets, MTV plans on extending the brand even farther into television, movies and publishing.
"The combination of NeoPets and Nick.com gives us a one-two punch leadership position in the online entertainment space among kids and young adults," said Herb Scannell, vice chairman of MTV Networks and president of Nickelodeon Networks.
