How to ally?

Hi all

Just bought the game this weekend and I'm thoroughly hooked. So far I'm mostly playing easy games to get the feel after my first game on normal ended in total humiliation...

My problem is I can't ally with my friends. As I saw in another thread you have to be close, and I assume the alliance should then be an option in the "speak to" window, but I can't find it. What am I doing wrong.

Last just a little comment about the game. I've never seen a game where random events had such huge implications (most extremely seen as planetquality +9 in 9 sectors!!!). You can't plan the game from start to finish - you have to adapt. It's fun but somewhat frustrating.

Welcome to the forum, Magraev.

I've extracted another thread on the same topic for you. The answer is within http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=73790.

Try doing a search using keywords (for yours I used alliance), there are many good threads out there on common questions already.

Yes, random events could drastically alter the game situation but they are mostly rare. Makes the game more fun IMO.

Thanks for the help, but

a) I can't get the link to work, never mind I'll try searching some more myself.

b) As it can be seen from my original post I have been searching, and I thought I had the reason I couldn't ally (closeness) but that wasn't it - hence the question.

I appreciate the quick answer. The reason for my relative testiness is, that I've been helping newbies on other boards for years (Total War and Championship Manager to name a few) and told them the same thing ;p

wow you guys are fast!

BTW I seem to have all the things on the checklist down and still no alliance. I'm playing the unpatched version (yet) can that explain it?

If an alliance you wish to form, true all the following must be:

1. Alliance tech has been researched by YOU (this is a fairly advanced tech, down the communication tree)

2. Your ally to-be must have Close relations with you.

If true the above are, the Alliance offer should appear in the speak-to screen. If you are not militarily stronger than the Ally to-be then you may have to include something extra for him to accept...

I heard someone mention that the AI must also have the alliance tech to Ally. Do they have it, Magraev?

Oops, didn't realise Dep Zep mentioned this as well in this post.
If so, I'm really stumped as well.

I can't figure it out. As far as I can see all prerequisites are met. I'll try to experiment a bit more after work today...

Just thought I'd finish this off.

The problem was, that the ai's didn't have the tech. I thought they did since they were happily allying with each other, but they didn't. :SURPRISED:

Thanks for the help.
