The Terror Grows

The Drengin forced the crowds of prisoners towards the river. Ray’s last piece of advice had been particularly helpful and had sped up the subjugation of the Human Galaxy immeasurably.

Ill Met in the Doom

Dropbear ran as fast as the wind, down the docks: past the MWC Manifest Destiny, past his stolen corvette, past his shiny new battleaxe. Dropbear darted onto the last ship on the dock: the Ship of Doom. The metallic corridors of the Ship of Doom were more familiar to him, than to many pirates.

Yet he entered a room he had never entered before. He looked around with interest, his heart furiously pounding.

Their eyes met. Dropbear shivered, for he knew the dark countenance, the evil, suave glint of the brooding eyes. He had met KitWarrior twice before and been shaken after each encounter. The paintings and artwork filled the small cabin of the Doom’s quartermaster.

Kit sighed: “So my little evil rival, your end is near”. The Drengin footfalls could even now be heard as they followed the animal faeces alarm bells.

Dropbear like many characters in this story, was brave. And yet he was emotional and tired. His little world was topsy-turvy. He slumped to the floor and instinctively looked forlorn.

Now, Kit was evil and he was a pirate too. But he had voted for Gerakken and the Thermidorian party. He hated the pirate who had forged the apocalyptic alliance with the Drengin, against all advice. And finally, he was deeply touched by the cute and cuddly bear who was slumped at his feet, forlornly. “Quick, behind this painting. Here, have a piece of chocolate and be quiet as a mouse”.

The door flew open and a pirate entered: the Drengin bullies at his back.

The pirate looked at the artistic art and snorted, icily: “So, KitWarrior… the artist. A chopping offence! This explains why you never had time to come to Yoda’s yoga and spiritual healing hour”.

Kit shrugged: “At least I have grey matter, and the good sense to use it. Alliance with the Drengin! What were you thinking Mr….”

“Shut up Kit”. The pirate looked about. He asked sharply: “Where is the bear? Your life will be spared if you tell me now”.
Kit laughed without humour. “I have no idea. He should be well away and free by now, Mr….”

“Shut up Kit. By the authority invested in me by the Committee of Public Safety, I arrest you as an artist under clause 23B of The Law of Suspects. The pirate turned to the Drengin, who were wearing human clothes with what appeared to be a winged badge on their lapels. “Take him away” he said to them, motioning to Kit.
Kit began to draw his cutlass, but alas his painting of the Sabine Women got in the way and he was quickly bundled from the room.

The pirate took a last hateful look at the fine art strewn about the room and then left without a final glance. On the dock he said to the Drengin thugs: “Go to Kit’s room and destroy the art. Burn the lot. Burn, burn, burn BURN, BURN THEM ALL”.

FREEEEEDDDOOOM!

Kit placed his neck on the coagulated, sticky, wet wood.

He screwed up his courage to the sticking point. So this is how it ends, he thought. Still: live, live, adorable little bear! Let not my sacrifice be in vain!

A whooshing sound was the last sound Kit heard.

It was the sound of a very fast wombat, rushing to the platform. The wombat tripped the executioner and pushed him off the platform. The Drengin muttered at this sight but did not move: they looked befuddled.

“Kill them, burn them, what are you not doing?” screamed the traitorous pirate, spittle flying from his mouth.

The Drengin storm troopers looked momentarily confused, but then helped Kit to his feet and gave the wombat a hug and a back scratch. The Drengin overlord, Jazaxorax, grabbed the traitor and asked Wild Wombat: “Your orders sir?”

Wild Wombat laughed at the pirate’s confusion: “You need an explanation? What do you think the Freedom Force has been doing these past few weeks? We’ve been culture bombing them! Did you think the Drengin could resist our culture for long? Ha. Take him away!”

The Drengin, anxious to please their new mates, took Mr Pink 7’s arms and dragged him away, roughly.

What It Means To Be A Freedom Force Fighter

The Freedom Force fighters proudly marched down the boulevard. The throngs of humans, in a rare unity, waved and cheered them. “You have freed us. You are heroes. Hurrah.” the throngs cried. The Freedom Force fighters coyly waved back. They hadn’t asked for a victory parade or for this adulation. But now they had it, they liked it. Arm-in-arm they went. Down the road, forever.

Postscript

Pontius left his bedroom, finally. He was bored with planetary wars and galaxies and bad English. He had also spent enough quality time with Mrs Pilot. He missed his true mates. He missed reality.

Pontius wandered up to the Bridge and looked in. The Spymaster turned and glared. “Um, anything happened while I’ve been away?”

Notes:
1. The adventure, as I have related it, is somewhat accurate. Some facts have been changed or re-arranged for dramatic effect. This is called poetic licence.
2. Pontius has not played and would never play SWG. He knows better.
3. Many, many people died in this adventure, but fortunately, no animals gave up their lives.
4. Sinbad was found in his box some weeks later, alive and well, and is again fat. His knowledge of quantum physics is currently being tested.
5. Bakka’s bats were later each awarded the Wings of Freedom.
6. Very little beer was drunk or even talked about in this adventure. I wanted to test public reaction to such an omission.
7. Jazaxorax was unhappy once more in his short life: this time over a failed romance. His life ended on Wardell, as he stormed a Yor bunker yelling “Freeeeedom for huma…. Uh. Damn.”.
8. The G.R.O.S.S. election result was unfortunate. The butterfly votes were actually kept, and stored. Forty years later, a historian counted the votes and discovered that Gerakken had not only miscounted, but got the names mixed up. The election winner had been someone-else entirely.
9. As you can tell, I don’t have much time for Peggy-Sue. Jimmie is a really decent guy and I don’t think that he deserves…well anyway, I’m not getting into it. It’s their lives.
10. Saint-Just is so not the Nemesis of Ray. Did Ray die that day? We are not entirely sure as no one has ever actually seen Ray. Food for thought, eh.
11. Kit’s artwork was saved when the Drengin converted to humanity’s cause. The paintings now hang in the Australian National Gallery. As a result, Gerakken felt he should not expel Kit for his art and indeed, to this day has a KitWarrior hanging in his living room.
12. Mr. Pink 7 was later tried for treason against the human race. The Fellowship of the Ring trial judge was touched by his lawyer’s account of a sad childhood and failed romance and decided his treason had been a call for help. He was released with a good behaviour bond and undertook 100 hours of community service. He now lives somewhere on Skowbo with his wife Mrs P, and their cats, Pinky and SevenUp. He is actually quite nice and a little misunderstood.

I....am.....speechless.....I don't know if I can bear to try and type another story on this compu-thingy after reading this amazing stuff!

A thought: should we just stick to this thread with stories? Gets confusing chasing threads all over the Metaverse!

Yeah I agree with Wombat, authors should stick to their own threads for ease of us readers.

Most of us would know which ones to go to for our favourite authors ;)

Wombie and Ray: I agree with you. And it gives everyone an extra reason for checking the various threads!

I have read the Spymaster's storyline in its entirety and what a fantastic effort! Apparently the Freedom Force is on Lepton: didn't know that!

And Yoda's website is also fantastic: there is so much talent out there!

Good gaming to you all. :D

Ah, but they have the ability to go back and forth to Earth freely through their hidden gate! On Earth, the members of Freedom Force are just misunderstood mutants like the other repressed, rightless ones. But on Lepton, they can shape the destiny of all under their domain. So grab some more misunderstood mutants and let the Lords of Lepton rules wisely.

War of the Worlds

The Freedom Force heroes gathered outside a small military complex on Iversonia. The Rainbow Serpent has obtained intelligence that a crystal of great power was being kept here under guard, although the exact nature of this crystal was unknown. Cautiously, they made their way inside.

Wombat looked at Bakka: "Bakka - give us a scan of the base."
Bakka's super bat sonar went into action. "Well, there's a crowd of Drengin guards just around the corner, and a couple of Yor servants in the hall just past them. There's also an area beyond that's kind of hard to scan...not sure...if that crystal's anywhere - that's where it'll be."

Wombat glanced around the corner, taking in the four fearsome guards...he stepped around the corner, pointed at the guards, and a low crooning voice erupted:
In the jungle
The mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight....

The Drengin fell forward, snoring gently.

The group made their way past the sleeping guards and came face to face with the Yor. Suddenly, Hurley cartwheeled towards them, and bouncing off the wall, his flippers moving like lightning at the nearest Yor - Pow! Thwack! Splat! The towering Yor crumpled.

Hurley smoothed a feather back into place. "I like my Yor shaken, not stirred", the penguin coolly said.

During the commotion, Drop Bear used his sharp claws to climb up the wall and across the ceiling, right above the other Yor. The others smiled...they knew what was coming. Drop Bear gave a small burp, the Yor looked up, and....
"Ewwww..." said Bakka.

The group raced to the far end of the complex. Surprisingly, the main doors were unguarded. Entering the last door at the end of the corridor, ajm peered into the darkness and exclaimed: My God....it's full of beer!"

Drop Bear wrinkled his nose and peered in. "Hmm...it's Budweiser....none of the good stuff...not that these uncultured heathens understands the mellow beauty of a fine red...but wait - someone dropped a napkin here - this reads: Courtesy of the Frozen Icicle, best cantina on Palain Seven."

Wombat examined the napkin. "Looks like we picked the wrong week to give up amphetamines. Leave the beer - although I still can't work out why the Drengin and Yor are allied here, or how they got a hold of this weak American beer. To the Avatar - and to Palain Seven!"

For Crimes Against Piracy

"keelhaul verb, transitive." Kit tightened the reinforced ropes around Drop Bear's wrists. "First definition, nautical: to haul a man... or a koala bear in your case... under a ship from one side to the other or from stem to stern, a former punishment." Kit looked around the Survey Ship of Doom, measuring with his eyes. The other pirates paused and waited for a new command. "Hmmm... I didn't think about doing it from stem to stern. We'll try that." He carried the struggling animal on his good shoulder and the dictionary under his opposite arm. From the bow of the ship the pirates began to rework the lines. "And this mention of it being a 'former' punishment must be a typo. I think it's supposed to read 'a form of punishment', wouldn't you agree, chum?" Drop Bear's mouth was gagged. A muffled noise was all that could be heard. EBZ repeated "chum" with a chuckle. Kit continued, "second definition: to reprove severely." He titled his head back and laughed. "Well THAT'S an understatement!" The helpless koala was hoisted into position. "Do try to stay conscious, oh Evil Fuzzy One." Kit smiled as Black Smoke handed him the rope that would initiate the fun. Without delay Kit jerked the rope. WOOOOOOSH!!! Bakka swooped down, grabbed his friend, and cut him free all in one motion. "Freedom Force!" the bat yelled over his beating wings. His smile gone, Kit sighed and dropped the rope. "Oh bother" was his only comment.

*Sigh* How complex pirates are! One minute they are sacrificing themselves for no reason at all, and the next, torturing little animals for no reason at all.
Yet, evil is spelt live backwards, and little koalas are nothing if not survivors. Live, little bear, live!

Note: When my prose gets too flowery my partner has found that a good hard slap sets me straight.

Hey team - we're a whisker away from the Republic after Hurley dropped another bomb on the competition. And they thought THEY were saving the universe.... ;)

I'm finishing up a tiny map, but it keeps crashing for some reason! It's not bad to get so far with only 6 players.

What happened to FriendJosh I wonder? He quit ANZACs but didn't join the Freedom Force!

Look what I just found on the ANZAC thread, isn't it cute!:

Hi there!

I'm brand new - just signed up and installed GalCiv today - and would love to join the ANZAC Empire. I'm in Melbourne (great weather, lousy football teams) - can I join? How do I join? Bearing in mind Christopher's comments above I would like to maintain decent relationships with my wife and children and would be offering my newbie talents for fun and not for profit!

BTW, the motto of the HMS ANZAC is "United We Stand". Pretty good, huh?

Cheers,

Can you believe it was only 2 months ago Wombie?? :D
Reply #65 Top
Hehe...time flies, doesn't it! Well, my wife and children still recognise me, my talents are still at the newbie level, and I'm still having fun

I tell you what - "United We Stand" still sounds good as a motto for FF, too.

I'm also not sure what happened to FriendJosh - c'mon mate - climb aboard! If you glance at the leader board, you will see Adrian Hill (I think) at around No.6 (not aligned with an empire) - check his games and he's an Aussie! If only....

And BTW - I just squeaked in a very strange small game (I'd set all the alignments of other civs to good, then I played all evil choices) worth about 3000 - but enough to put us over the Republic!!

I note Drop Bear also showed us his talent today - which he has in far greater abundance than I - great work mate! Sit back and enjoy a red Sunday night..... ;)

Drop Bear,

I was thinking, if you change your name again. You might consider Sly Bear.

That way you could sneak into the enemy's camp at night. And bite their heads off undetected and sneak out without being noticed. (smle)

freedom force is first-class all the way.

Rock On!

OOOOOH, those pesky mutants!

Good job, mates. Nice to see a fellow themed empire rising up the ladder. But don't forget to keep an eye on your rear-view mirror; the saga is far from over.

After Drop bears the narrow escape from a keelhauling, Pontius noticed something peculiar about the Drop bear formerly known as Chris. He seemed to be, for lack of a better word, changing yet again. Could it be the mutational effects of the transmorgifrier were not yet complete? Pontius didn't want to think about those kind of ramifications. Better not to think about it, he thought. Besides, once we hit the coral reef, Drop bear would be free. Free from his mortal coil that is. The Bat had only delayed the inevitable.

Hehe...crank it up, everyone - only 50k to the Apolytons, then the loooong 250k haul to the Euros.
But hey - we're superheroes, right?

Enjoy your gaming and have a good week; looking forward to another Slitherin vs Hurley main event, hopefully the cuddly bear will Drop a few more for us, and with any luck we'll hear from Quack, Cotal and FriendJosh. Bakka and ajm - keep pumping 'em out. And if anyone would like to develop their superpowers, just write in and I'm happy to incorporate them into any story I drop in - otherwise I'm going to start giving you all superpowers that I dream up (now there's a threat) - especially you, ajm, you need a superhero nick too!

Cheers, everyone :)

As for the wild, slightly imbalanced, but respected MM77, my normal advice of joining an empire, any empire does not fit. I would say in this special case that he is Freedom Force material. :)

The Revenge of The Nemesis of Ray!

Backstory

It came to pass that Ray the Wanderer made some enemies.

Not, horrible, ugly, nasty enemies: but nice, cute, quite acceptable enemies. They were the type of enemies that if you had them, you would think: well they are quite nice, I could have done worse.
Dropbear was one enemy of Ray. Yet, Dropbear had a selection of qualities from the nice sort of enemies, and some from the not-so-nice sort. As with everything, Dropbear pretty much broke the mould when it came to being an enemy.

Now, it is probable that the fellows of the Fellowship of the Ring, which Ray headed as Supreme Ruler, all thought that Ray was good and wholesome and had never done anything bad in his short life. As Dropbear knew, this was far from the truth.

Dropbear knew with a cold certainty that Ray held his evil megalomania tightly bound inside. For had not Ray once said: “MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA, FEEL THE WRATH OF THE WHITE COUNCIL...Oops, sorry guys, the evil megalomaniac in me got out again. Cheers, have a nice day...”
And had not Ray once stated: “Just sign this contract swearing everlasting fealty to the White Council. And there is no need for you to read the 100 pages of small print attached behind.”
Had not the Wizard once sported his evil moniker with shame, before quickly covering it?
There were many more examples.

Yes, thought Dropbear: Ray too is evil, but cannot bring himself to admit it. And there was one more evil deed that Ray had done: he had turned Chris into- a dropbear! He had also turned Wombie into a sheep, but Wombie had managed to reverse that spell with alacrity. Poor Dropbear was not so alacritious (if not a word, it should be), and he yet dwelt as a pathetic and little, although, adorable animal.
Dropbear had the goods on RayChua the Wizard, but made the mistake of telling the Wizard that he was about to be unmasked before his beloved White Council. This clearly led to RayChua disappearing and going into hiding. Long had Dropbear searched for RayChua, and one day, he knew he would find him, and extract the cruellest and most savage revenge.

Yes: revenge by The Nemesis of Ray!

Revenge Is Best Served Cold

Ray the Wanderer sighed. ‘It is lonely at the top’ he thought, on a whim.

This line of thought got him thinking about the management of organisations and perhaps better models of corporate management. After a half hour of pleasant daydreaming, he got out of bed.

Ray’s sleep had been poor. The inn’s goose down mattress contained bed bugs and this had caused him to develop an itchy rash. Ray’s asthma from the dusty room started soon after he placed his old head on the pillow made of stale rags and other things. The room was cramped, with a draughty open window, and the stone floor was damp with rotting rushes.

Although Wizards don’t take baths and such, Ray was a bit of a modern Wizard and did usually at least spray cold mountain river water on his face and hands. Not this morning! The water brought to the room was carried by the innkeeper’s very ugly wife, whilst the keeper’s nubile daughter looked after Kit the Warrior. The water had clearly been pulled from the fetid, boggy river that also collected the town’s sewerage. Still, Ray carefully washed, for he was a creature of habit.

Ray eventually turned from his wash at the dresser, and froze. Fear clenched his stomach and shook it.
Dropbear chuckled and waved his deathray zorcher. Neither said a word, for there was nothing to say.

Ray: The Very Young Child

Ray the Wanderer looked his mother in the eye.

He had had a revelation at school that day and wished to share it with her as soon as his little legs could get him home. “Mother” he said, “I have decided what I wish to be when I grow up”. With pride, Ray’s mother knelt and smoothed his hair: “What do you want to be my little boy: a doctor, a scientist, a manager?”
Little Ray shook his head firmly: “No mother, I want to be a zoo keeper and feed the animals and sweep their cages!”

Ray’s mother looked with horror at Ray. “Ray, take that gum from your mouth, now!”

Ray Pleads For His Life

“But Dropbear” Ray whined, “I didn’t do it to you. It was Eldin, I tell you!”

Dropbear shook his head for the thirtieth time. Ray had by now implicated the whole Fellowship in the past events. Gengsta had formulated the plot; Keith had made the polymorph spells etcetera etcetera. When would Ray accept full responsibility?!

“And what of my good works! My leadership and strength! Why, people respect me, they look up to me! Please don’t do this!” he said, wringing his hands. Dropbear looked down at Ray: he chose his words carefully, for this was a day he had long envisaged.

Ray: The Student

The lecturer droned on.

Ray finished drawing his picture of a teenage boy riding a white dragon. He had just finished reading The White Dragon and was about to start The Riftworld saga. He so wished he could leave his mundane life and fulfil his dream. Not for the last time, he wondered what it would be like to be a dragonrider of Pern.

Dropbear Touches Ray

Ray was deeply touched by Dropbear’s long tirade.
It was a speech that brought tears to his eyes. Ray realised how badly he had wronged the other man. The weeks of humiliation and shame: the anal jokes; the dags; the constant shaving. With all his being, Ray wanted to right the wrong. The magic that Dropbear wove was strong indeed.

Ray: The Young Man

The office gathering crowded around the teapot, slowly sipping their teas and chatting. Young Kylie was flicking through her magazine with an occasional snicker. Jason was rearranging the office footy table.
“Strewth Blueie. Do ya reckon tha Swannies can go all the way, like”.
“Nah. Prooblie not Sharkie. But me Mum reckons the Port will, like.”

The gathered crowd nodded, thoughtfully. “Hey, Spacie, have ya heard ‘bout this here special offer? Ya join some special group and ya can geet free tickets to the Grand Final!” Spacie looked interested, although he was kept busy with his wife and children and he was a Carlton supporter.

Now, the gathered ‘workers’ were innocent of the ways of the world. But something in the body language of the strange man with the clipboard, making notes, made them uneasy. He didn’t seem to know any footy teams and rarely drunk tea. To no avail they had tried to include him in their morning and afternoon teas, office gossip sessions and long lunches. Eventually, doubtfully, they went back to their desks, the better to read the footy news.

Ray Gives In

But Ray was not a top administrator for nothing. He was, after all, Supreme Ruler of an oligarchy. He had slipped away from assassination attempts before and he had the power to do so again. It was just that, this time, he didn’t have the will! He wanted to pay the ultimate price for his treachery!

Ray reached into his gown and took out a delicious piece of chocolate: “Here Dropbear, I have wronged you. If I must pay the ultimate price, at least take this small gift from me before you exact that price”. Ray’s eyes glinted in the morning light. Dropbear he knew, adored chocolate, and could certainly not resist delicious chocolate.

Ray: The Supreme Ruler of an Oligarchy

Ray the Wanderer looked around the White Council Fellowship Ethics Committee meeting, listlessly.
‘How did I get here’ he thought. His dreams of mucking out dragon pens or caring for little creatures of the wood now seemed a distant memory. What funny paths we walk, as we walk life’s star trek. The bright future we see in our childhood, leads to something completely different by the time that old age beckons.

Too, the problem of Dropbear and Dropbear’s nearing expose weighed heavily on his mind. How could he escape the shame of Dropbear’s expose? Why had he cavorted with those semi-clad elf maidens?

Ray glanced out the window and briefly watched the fellow fairies dancing in a fairy ring. He had an idea.

Treachery Of course

Of course, as you have guessed, Ray was again treacherous. The chocolate was drugged. Dropbear was now the one who whimpered in fear.

Ray poked Dropbear with his pointed boot: “Dropbear, Dropbear. How do you think I became Supreme Leader of an oligarchy? By being nice?” He laughed. A quite pleasant laugh: “hahahaha”. Unlike the usual laugh of megalomaniacs which normally go like: MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Even brave bears who have faced death and keelhauling, can feel fear when a transparently evil Wizard Ray stands over them truculently, nudging them with an iron-tipped boot, and holding a deathray zorcher. Dropbear, despite himself, looked forlorn.

Now Ray was cruel, and he was Supreme Leader of an oligarchy too. Yet he had genuinely felt guilty about his past deeds, although he had always justified them in his own mind. He had, for a minute, wanted to recompense Dropbear for the pain and suffering the small bear had suffered. And finally, he was deeply touched by the cute and cuddly bear who was slumped at his feet, forlornly.

Ray paused and shook his head: “I know not why I do this little bear, but I yet have some goodness in me still. I shall let you live today little fella. But do not cross my path again”.

With that, Ray the Wanderer passed from the room and descended into the inn’s common room, his good and nice face firmly in place.

The War of the Worlds

The Freedom Force Avatar bored a hole in the ether heading for Palain Seven. A sensor alert flashed on the main console, and Hurley looked up from his favourite DVD, Kung Pow: Way of the Penguin. "Hey guys - ship on our screens - unknown configuration."

Drop Bear moved across to the comm station. "Hailing unidentified vessel at mark 2.47 - identify yourself"

A crackling static, followed by several strange clicks, and then:

"This is Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise."

The heroes looked at each other."Nahh...no way!" said Bakka.

"I repeat: this is Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise. Our five year mission to explore new..."
"Yes, yes, we know" interrupted Slitherin. "But what on earth are you doing here?"

"Our ship was catapulted into a wormhole while fighting the Borg. We tried to reconfigure the main deflector dish by hooking it up in parallel with Spock's ears, but blew ourselves up. We time travelled back five minutes to correct our mistake and were nearly on the verge of destruction when Uhura handed out these neat cookies and everything seemed all right after that."

ajm glanced around the command deck and rolled his eyes."Okaaaay....right then....what do you plan to do now?"

"Spock here, strange thing, Jim...fascinating...."
"What's fascinating, Spock?"
"Your ass, Jim...I've always admired it..."
"Spock, you inhuman monster, I thought it was Bones you fancied...and I always felt I looked better in blue..."

Drop Bear flicked off the comm switch. "Hurley - full blast for Palain Seven - now!"

"What was that all about?" asked ajm
"Life, mate - but not as we know it." replied Drop Bear, sighing.

Palain Seven lived up to its publicity as a frozen iceball in space. Settlements were few, and the Frozen Icicle was relatively easy to find. The heroes discussed their approach. "We need a distraction while I search the cantina." muttered Wombat. He glanced over at the Rainbow Serpent's glittering coils. "You look the part for a disco - we'll go down together; you keep 'em busy while I sniff around."
