Why do the ships of a dead race keep moving and attacking?

I thought when a race was killed off (no planets, colony ships, or transports) it was supposed to be dead. Its ships should stop moving or be removed from the playing field.

If a race is considered still alive if it still has colony ships or transports it should still appear in the lists of races, but it doesn't. Is a race considered dead even if it still has colony ships and/or transports?

Cheers,
Jack

I like the fact that they keep attacking, but they should be recoloured as pirate ships or raceless ships or something else. Freighters should be removed! But is you commanded a powerful avatar ship and your home planet was captured would you self explode or cause as much damage as possible in revenge?

Perhaps even leave a UI issue of restoring an empire if any ships remain? Successful vote returns the home system to the previously destroyed race, but with a low population, peace with all empires and protected status?

I like the idea if being able to resurrect and protect an "extinct" race. Maybe the AI would learn something from the lesson of being exterminated?

pirates, guerrillas, refugees, etc...those sort of third column grey-area type issues would really muck up people's strategies. I mean what if because they were defeated(and had the sympathy of the people), you tied a strong influence point loss or something to attacking them.

If they were situated(by the UP) in a strategic place, or on a strategic planet, they could affect the UP vote from a *protected* status. The sympathy of the people would give them great power, even though they were *defeated* militarily.

That would be something no strategy has ever done before........something real.

One could (and perhaps should) also consider this when a planet rebels. If you
have captured a planet from the Yor and it rebels, it should (perhaps with some
probability) revert back to the Yor. Maybe even if the Yor are gone - then
it could be "The Popular Front For The Liberation of The Yor" that has the
system.

Planetary Clensing technology may prevent this.

Ships left from extinct species shouldn't be allowed to patrol indefinitely without
access to a home base and supplies. But the crews may decide to turn the ships
over to allies - if the Torians are invaded by the Drengins who are also at war
with the Yor, they may well turn their ships over to the Yor when the last planet
is invaded.

This wouldn't happen when a race surrenders - so this is incentive to hold out
for surrender rather than to invade the last planet.

Hmm...yes, a race is dead if it has no more planets. With the way that the code is now, it will cancel the ship destinations of the dead civ's ships. Maybe the AI is trying to reset the destinations (like it missed a check to see if it was dead or not).
