I look like my mom

I look like my mom

not like her face or her creamy skin
not the gray hair or liver spots or the
crinkly flesh that hung from her arms
not the dead cataracts that made her eyes
milky in the center and green on the edges,

I don't have her walk or the patient stare,

maybe some of her meanness, but I don't smell
like White Shoulders or wear false teeth or tell children
they will go blind or grow hair on their palms,

I don't wear a moo-moo or fuzzy slippers
I don't eat eggs half cooked on white bread
I don't smoke--anymore,

I don't even share the same genes--I'm adopted.

but when I looked a recent photo of me sitting at a table
surrounded by all my mistakes, well....

I look like my mom.

Mistakes, like scars, are receipts of living life. You am a receipted-up MF.
