Midgame frustration

I'm at about midgame... and have nothing to do.
It's just 2 of us left.
I have 1/4 of the stars but much more advanced.
We have friendly relations.
We cannot attach each other (for different reasons).
We cannot make an alliance (he's imperialist, I'm federalist).
My survey ship has sweeped all sectors.
I'm slooooowly building and researching.
Any hint on how to finish the game?

Brad, you should think about it... ;)

In the final version here are the options that would be open to you:

1) Try to win economically -- use your superior technology to dominate them economically and win as the trade mogul of the galaxy.

2) If you have close relations, win by allying with them. Form of govenrment doesn't matter.

3) Use your superior technology to destabilize them and crush them into the dirt through destabilization.

These are things we're going to try to do soon so that we can get plenty of play testing out of this.

Brad,
will destabilization eventually allow for enemy empires to be split into two or more fraction civil wars? This could be quite cool! Obviously the same thoing should be possible to you with low moral planets and serious lack or control of the senate.

Precisely.

Civilizaitons can be broken up into minor races.

The 5 main alien civilizations are the main ones that exist for the purposes of handling game winning conditions and extensive diplomacy.

How powerful the minor races get will depend on time and how you guys want it. I definitely don't want to see dozens of minor races in the game because it could get into a real mess but once they are in, the political issues should become quite interesting.
