Exchanging a tech that's being researched

In one of my games, I managed to trade a technology that I was currently researching. When I then tried to change my research to a different tech.....POOF! Exit to desktop 
Unfortunately I've had serious trouble with the MCP/SE, so SE isn't currently installed, and I can't send any files (not even the saved game, since it's no longer there). I assume it's something in the code that's creating a conflict, and probably easy to fix
