HELP: GalCiv is not loading right :(

First let me give the needed information. I am playing GalCiv with the latest patch on Windows XP on a laptop with a 1024x768 screen size. I have the color depth set to the highest - 32 bits. I'm playing the game with 256MB of RAM and have the latest version of DirectX. The monitor is 15in.
When I originally installed the game, everything worked fine. Later, I go to play a game and get a blank black screen with a slightly larger size mouse pointer. I hear clearly the multimedia sound on the speaker. I clicked on the spacebar then the screen flickers fora second. I then get a much smaller mouse pointer. One that I have normally on this screeen resolution. I still don't see anything on the screen but hear everything.
Incidentally both the larger mouse pointer and the smaller pointer are able to go off screen. I'm using the built in glide pad for my mouse needs. The large mouse pointer is one that I get at the laptop's 800x600 screen size.
Yes, I do have ZoomText (my screen magnifier) off. Yes, I did try and uninstall the game and the related files from the laptop and instaled from SDC. It worked when I installed the game itself. The game even worked after the Bonus Pack and only once or twice after the multimedia was installed. I've try starting the game from the executable, the desktop icon and from SDC and nothing
I am really frustrated; especially since I know the game normally works and have had hours of fun on a regular PC.
